WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point men's rugby opens its four-match fall home slate Friday night, welcoming the Walsh Cavaliers to Anderson Rugby Complex a 6:00 p.m. start.
YouTube will provide Friday night's stream.
"We're incredibly excited to play our first home game on Warrior Field Friday night and build on last week's performance," said head coach Matt Sherman. "Walsh brings a very big and physical team, that tested us last year significantly, and we expect another field challenge. We aim to build on the discipline we showcased in Canada, but be far more accurate defensively."
"It's an honor and a privilege to wear the jersey against Walsh and have the opportunity to honor the jersey; with the season opener we aim to set the bar high and live up to the legacy set by those who've come before us," said Dakoda Wagner.
"Wearing the jersey against Walsh is an honor. We're here to raise the standard, keep climbing, and honor the brothers who came before us," said Cort Schmidlin.
Army is 1-0 all-time against Walsh, defeating the Cavaliers 45-20 on October 26 last season in North Canton, Ohio. Gabe Savage scored a pair of tries in the fixture, and in the second half, the Black Knights' offense took control. George Engels scored in the 43rd minute, followed by a successful conversion from Kolbe Schrichte, giving Army the lead. Despite a Black Knights penalty that led to a Walsh try in the 57th minute, Army quickly responded with a Benji Kemp try just two minutes later, with Heller converting to extend the lead to 24-13.
Army is off to a 1-0 start to 2025-26, following a 38-28 win over Canadian rival Guelph in the first leg of the Cannon Cup.
Against the Gryphons, Army responded to a second half deficit with 19 unanswered points in the second half. Andrew Bardak found the try zone to cut the deficit to two points, before Chance Loudenback took an offload to score in the 75th minute. The ensuring conversion put Army ahead 33-28 and kept the lead permanently. Cort Schmidlin recorded a pair of tries in the victory.
Like Army, Walsh also heads into Friday 1-0, with the Cavaliers fresh off a win last week at home over Notre Dame.
Army hits the road again next weekend for a September 20 affair at Life University in Marietta, Ga. The Black Knights are back at home September 27 vs. Southern Virginia.
