Men’s Rugby Thumps Walsh in Home Opener
September 12, 2025 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point men's rugby rolled to a 59-3 win over the Walsh Cavaliers in the squad's home opener at Anderson Rugby Complex Friday night.
With the win, Army moves to 2-0 in 2025-26.
"That was an awesome win in front of a great crowd at home. There are a lot of positives to take from the games and a lot of lessons that can help us continue climbing and finding a new best," said Isaac Gamboa.
"That was a great way to start the season with a home win. There's a lot to improve on to get a full 80 minutes of Army rugby. We need to reconnect at practice and keep climbing but that was a great foundation to build on," said George Hemmen.
That was a good statement game, it gives us a lot to improve and build upon," said Chance Loudenback.
Loudenback scored three tries before the first half ended, as the Black Knights found the try zone nine times. After Walsh got on the board just minutes into the contest with a penalty, Army would rattle off the first of 59 unanswered, starting with its own successful penalties in the 9' and 16' before swiftly putting clear separation on the scoreboard.
With the ball already on the try line's doorstep in the 18', Gamboa cleared the plain underneath the crossbar to score the first try of the season at Anderson, and a Howie Heller conversion made it 13-3.
Loudenback scored 18 consecutive points by himself late in the first half, with tries in the 25', 28' and 35.'
The second of those tries came as he fielded a kick right on the edge of the try zone, perfectly timed to recover the ball.
Later, Loudenback intercepted a pitch and took it the distance, scoring without being touched.
The last play of the first half was a Matt Leslie try in the left corner of the try zone, and Army went into halftime with a 33-3 lead.
Dylan Liskey scored for Army out of halftime in the 48', before Richard Corbett III took a pitch into the try zone just one minute later to open the floodgates.
Already holding a 47-3 lead, Hemmen blocked a Walsh kick in the 55' and waltzed into the try zone to complete the chargedown. Cort Schmidlin then joined the scoring party in the 64', before Corbett would step in and take the conversion, putting the final bow tie on a busy night for the Army attack.
