April 17, 2016 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - After tying the game in the second inning, the Army West Point softball team suffered a setback to the Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks chipped their way to a 6-4 victory.
Â
The Mountain Hawks (27-10, 8-1 PL) jumped ahead early after scoring two in the first inning. Renee Poirier had two outs and one player on, but Lehigh jammed the bases and had a hit to left center to score two.
Â
In the home half of the first, Mae Wadyka bunted to the third basemen and beat the run to first. Kasey McCravey then laced a single directly up the middle to advance Wadyka into scoring position. Alee Rashenskas was up next and was hit by a pitch to create a bases loaded situation for Army (25-16, 7-4 PL) with no outs.
Â
Emily Gray stepped to the plate and knocked a two-run single to right field to tie the score at 2-all, still with no outs. Kristen McPeek then recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance both Rashenskas and Gray into scoring position. An RBI single by Gladys Esparza-Gallegos gave the Cadets a 3-2 lead over Lehigh.
Â
Lehigh bounced back in the next inning however and scored with two outs on the board to retie the game at 3-3.
Â
The teams were scoreless in the next two innings as the score remained 3-3. Kristen West stepped to the rubber in relief in the fifth inning. The Mountain Hawks had players on second and third with no outs, but outs by Rashenskas brought the Black Knights closer to getting out of the jam. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rashenskas made a catch in foul territory to get Army out of the bases loaded jam.
Â
Lehigh scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and shut down the Black Knights in the home half. During the top of the seventh, the Mountain Hawks scored two more fueled by a double to left field. West pitched the first two strikeouts by either side in this inning.
Â
In Army's last at-bat, McCravey hit a smart ball to right center getting her on first. Rashenskas slammed a double to left field which was inches from going over the fence to send McCravey home bringing the score to 6-4.
The Black Knights will be on the road for their next two contests as they travel to Quinnipiac for a mid-week non-conference doubleheader Wednesday. Army will also head to Holy Cross next Saturday and Sunday for a three-game Patriot League matchup with the Crusaders.
