Softball Downs Bobcats in Non-Conference Clash

HAMDEN, Conn. – An eight-run fifth inning in the first game fueled the Army West Point softball team past Quinnipiac 12-4 before downing the Bobcats 3-1 in the final game of the doubleheader.
The Bobcats (16-22) came out with an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Black Knights (27-16) came back to take a 3-1 lead in the next inning. Taylor Gaff, who made her first appearance since the teams played in Florida, notched a single through the left side to get onto first. Tyler McKinney pinch ran for Gaff as Ashley Yoo enabled her to advance to second. Mae Wadyka's bunt forced a runners at the corners situation with one out before she stole second.
Kasey McCravey stepped up to the plate and blasted her first triple of the year to center field. She sent in both McKinney and Wadyka and scored herself on a Quinnipiac error to give Army a 3-1 lead. The Bobcats re-tied the game at 3-3 with two runs off two hits in the home half of the third.
Army blasted the game open in the fifth with eight runs off five hits and five errors to increase the Cadets' lead to 11-3. McCravey was walked and stole second off the bat. Alee Rashenskas notched a single, but advanced to second due to an error by the Bobcats which also pushed McCravey to third. Kristen McPeek then reached on a fielder's choice before Gladys Esparza-Gallegos singled to the shortstop for an RBI which gave Army a bases loaded opportunity.
Caroline Smith made it on base due to another mishap by Quinnipiac with Rashenskas tallying an unearned run for the Black Knights. Gaff notched an RBI single to center field before Yoo reached on an error by the Bobcats sending Smith home. McCravey racked up two more RBI when she singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw. Rashenskas also singled to left field to send McCravey home to score for the second time in the inning.
The Black Knights and Bobcats were each able to pick up one more run to lock in the final score of 12-4 in favor of the Cadets in game one. McCravey's five RBI in the game tied her career-high which she has achieved on three other occasions.
In game two, the teams were tied in a 1-1 deadlock through the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, McCravey notched an RBI single to send Wadyka home for an unearned run.
Army padded its lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth when Hailey Megge crossed the plate off a single by Gaff to left center.
Smith was the winning pitcher in game one (6-6) and Renee Poirier picked up the win in game two to improve to 6-5 on the season.
After today's performance, McCravey not only leads Army in career RBI (150), home runs (25) and walks (72), but has now topped the total bases list with 372 to pass Army Hall of Famer Nicki Robbins. The senior infielder inches her way closer to the top spot in stolen bases (77) and batting average (.372) and hits (251) where she is second, and in at-bats (675) where she resides at No. 4.
The Black Knights remain on the road through the weekend as they have a three-game series at Holy Cross Saturday and Sunday.
