Army West Point head rifle coach Web Wright announced the addition of assistant coach Michael Matthews to his staff in November 2016.

1st Lt. Michael Matthews, who graduated from West Point in 2014, returns after three seasons to coach at his alma mater.

Under Matthews’ guidance, Nathan Brewer qualified for the NCAA for the second straight year in 2016.

Among other accomplishments, Matthews was a four-time NCAA Participant. At the 2012 NCAA Championships, he was runner-up in smallbore. He continued to prove his skill by becoming a three-time NRA All-American in that discipline, earning first team honors in 2013 and was a second team selection in 2012 and 2014.

Matthews was also a five-time All-GARC (Great American Rifle Conference) selection. He earned first team in 2013 and second team in 2012 in the smallbore discipline. In air rifle, he received an honorable mention in 2013, and in the combined discipline, he earned second team in 2013, as well as an honorable mention in 2012.

Commissioned as an Ordinance Officer, Matthews was assigned to Ft. Stewart, Ga., as a Platoon Leader in the 3rd Infantry Division. Matthews also served as the Battalion AS3 for the Warrior Transition Battalion before returning to West Point in November of 2016.
