No. 5 Men’s Lacrosse Advances to 5-0 Start with 15-5 Win Over Lafayette

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point men's lacrosse (5-0, 1-0 Patriot League) took on its first Patriot League opponent of the 2025 season Saturday at Michie Stadium, claiming a 15-5 win over the Lafayette Leopards to begin league play.
Gunnar Fellows and Brayden Fountain set the pace for the Black Knights' offense, recording four goals each towards Army's 10-goal advantage with three assists from Fountain and an assist from Fellows as well.
Robert Simone served as Army's primary face-off man in the contest, going 10-18 against the Leopards for a 0.556 face-off win percentage.
Junior goalkeeper Sean Byrne logged 55 minutes in goal, recording nine saves and allowing just five goals in the contest. He was relieved in the fourth quarter by Evan Richardson who tallied a pair of saves during his time in goal for Army.
Long-stick midfielder Christian Fournier led the game with seven ground balls, followed closely by Army's AJ Pilate and Lafayette's Evan Prince with six each. Fournier and Christian Mazur meanwhile forced three turnovers apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights' Patriot League opener got off to a contentious start with Lafayette breaking open the scoring just over three minutes into the action. Evan Plunkett got things rolling for Army with a goal five minutes into the action that brought things tied. Gunnar Fellows pushed Army to its first lead of the day with a goal just over eight minutes into the action before Lafayette tied things up once again a minute later. Fellows notched his second goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter to give Army a 3-2 lead heading into the first break.
The Black Knights hit the gas pedal in the second quarter, out-shooting the Leopards 16-6 in the second frame as they extended to a 9-3 lead before halftime. Christian Fournier set up Fellows for his third goal of the game to push Army ahead by two before the Leopards cut the Black Knights' lead to one with a goal midway through the second quarter. Brayden Fountain notched his first goal of the game with six and a half minutes left on the clock, followed by a rip from Evan Plunkett to take Army up 6-3. Jackson Eicher set up Fellows for his fourth goal of the day of the day with 4:15 remaining in the quarter before Evan Plunkett and Aiden Weisenborn both made good on man-up opportunities after back-to-back pushing penalties for the Leopards to put Army ahead 9-3 at the half.
Senior Jackson Eicher kept things moving for Army as the second half began, notching the first goal of the half less than a minute back into the action. Fountain and Robert Simone stretched Army's lead to nine with goals in the fifth minute of the quarter with Simone going unassisted on his first goal of the season. The Leopards found the back of the net just one minute later, but Fountain would take the Black Knights back up to their nine-goal advantage just over a minute later with his third goal of the game. Lafayette logged their fifth goal of the game with two minutes to go in the quarter but Army would score just under the one-minute mark as Fountain connected with Eicher for Eicher's second goal of the day to send the two into the final break with Army up 14-5 as the Black Knights out-shot the Leopards 16-3 in the third frame.
Brayden Fountain advanced Army to a 10-goal lead only 30 seconds into the fourth quarter with a blazing shot from the right side of the field to put the Black Knights up 15-5. The Black Knights stood tall on defense as they out-shot the Leopards 9-6 with three shots on goal for each team. Evan Richardson relieved Sean Byrne in goal with four and a half minutes remaining, recording two saves during his time on the field to maintain Army's 15-5 lead through the final whistle.
