Hockey Tripped Up at AIC, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Army West Point hockey (13-17-2, 13-10-2 Atlantic Hockey America) fell by a score of 3-2 to American International College (11-19-2, 9-14-1 Atlantic Hockey America) on Friday night from the MassMutual Center.
Army battled back to tie the game twice after falling behind two times but AIC was able to pull ahead 3-2 and not allow a goal in the final period.
Army's goals each came on special teams as Nils Forselius scored on the power play before a shorthanded tally came from Barron Woodring in the second period.
JJ Cataldo made 33 saves in net for Army before leaving the game at the third period media timeout. Chase Clark got the win in net for the Yellow Jackets with a 26-save effort.
AIC put the pressure on early and got the opening goal of the game off a rebound 6:20 in. Army challenged the goal for a kicking motion leading to the tally from Oscar Geschwind but the call was upheld.
Minutes later, Army went to the power play and converted just 12 seconds in as Nils Forselius cleaned up on the doorstep with assists going to Ben Ivey and Barron Woodring.
The Yellow Jackets continued to push the pace at even strength, even getting a premium scoring opportunity on another Army power play later in the period.
AIC retook the lead at 2-1 with 4:30 to go in the period as Theo Angesved notched his first of the season with a wristshot off a feed from Tyler Procious. The Yellow Jackets took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
AIC had a chance on another power play in the second frame, but Army was able to score its second shorthanded goal of the season to tie the score at two and halt AIC's momentum midway through the period.
Mac Gadowsky made a good feed in front to Barron Woodring who stuffed home his ninth of the season on his second attempt after Clark made an initial stop.
AIC had an instant response once again as the back-and-forth affair continued, with Dario Beljo scoring his 11th of the season just over a minute after Army's equalizing goal. AIC outshot the Black Knights 20-10 in the second period and took the 3-2 lead into the third. Cataldo made 19 saves in total in the frame on 20 shots faced.
AIC maintained the lead throughout the final frame, not allowing Army to get on the power play or have a grade-A chance on Clark. Army went to the empty net late in the game, but were not able to find a third equalizing goal as AIC posted the win with a 3-2 final score.
The two teams will return tomorrow for Army's regular season which will come at Tate Rink. Puck drop is set for 5:00 p.m. as the game marks 'Coach Riley Appreciation Night' as Brian Riley will coach his final regular season home game at West Point.
