February 21, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, NY - On a rainy afternoon at Michie Stadium, #20 Army West Point men's lacrosse (2-1, 0-0 PL) scored twenty times to take down Wagner (0-2, 0-0 MAAC) by a final score of 20-6.
The Black Knights trailed after one quarter of play, 4-3, before eventually holding Wagner scoreless for over 37 minutes of gametime and jumping out to an 11-5 lead at halftime.
Will Coletti dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 20 of 23 faceoffs for Army, adding 15 ground balls. Paul Johnson led the attacking unit, with a two-goal, five-assist performance as the seven points and five assists marked a season-high for any Black Knight. Evan Plunkett scored his first career hat trick to lead the team in goals with three.
Riding high off the big win at home on Saturday, Army jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Ryan Sellew and Reese Burek in the opening 2:10. After a tally from Jacob Morin with 10:16 left in the first, Army saw its 3-1 lead slip away as the Seahawks made a run. After a pair of goals tied the game at three, Army continued to turn over possession. A sloppy end of the quarter, Wagner scored the lone goal in the final 6:36 to eventually take a one-goal lead into the second.
Army saw itself down by a pair after the Seahakws struck first to make it a 5-3 contest with 12:51 to go in the half. Army made its run soon after, scoring five times in a span of 2:05 to go ahead 8-5. Coletti continued to win every faceoff, and the Black Knights offense found its rythym. Paul Johnson found Ryan Spositio to get the scoring started, before Johnson hammered home back-to-back goals of his own to pull Army head. With Johnson also assisting on the next goal to Reese Burek, Evan Plunkett then found the back of the net twice for the first of his eventual hat trick. Army outshot the Seahawks 17-3 in the quarter, and took an 11-5 lead into the break after Morin capped the first half scoring.
Army was in total control for the second half, allowing just one goal which came with 5:32 to play in the contest. Eamon Murphy and Dawson Clark each scored their first collegiate goals in the third quarter, while Ryan Sellew and Gunnar Fellows each took advantage on Army's two extra-man opportunities with scores. After Wagner broke the 15-0 Army run with its goal midway through the quarter, both Cal Lambert and Mike Tangredi logged their first career scores to put a bow on the contest.
Army eventually won the faceoffs battle 25-5, and put 37 shots on goal while facing just 13. The Black Knights will hit the road this weekend, to take on Mercer at 11:00 a.m.
