Men's Lacrosse Takes Care of Mercer On The Road, 16-5

MACON, Ga. -- Army West Point men's lacrosse (3-1) defeated the Mercer Bears (1-3) on the road, 16-5 Saturday afternoon.Â
Mercer started with energy and took an early 2-0 with two goals from Kyle Cox, but Army settled down and scored the next four to take a 4-2 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Paul Johnson got the scoring started for Army and Evan Plunkett added two in the quarter to lead the Black Knights. Â

Army continued the momentum in to the second period and Reese Burek kept it going with his first of the day. Ryan Sposito got in on the act in transition after a great caused turnover from Ryan Nixon while on the man-down defense. Gunnar Fellows closed out the scoring in the first half with a tally coming with 13 seconds on the clock and the Black Knights had an 8-3 going into the break. Â

The Black Knights kept the pressure on in the third quarter with Burek and Johnson scoring early to extend the lead to 10-3. Burek added the assist on Johnson's tally with a nice move to draw in the defense and spot Johnson alongside the crease for the goal. Johnson found the net again for the hat trick to make it 11-3. Finn McCullough finished off the frame by being the receiving end of great passing from the Black Knights and they were cruising at 12-3 with the final quarter to go. Â

The Bears were able to get two back to start the fourth quarter, but Army answered with the next three to close out the game. Cal Lambert and John Manero added to Army's lead with a goal apiece in the early going of the fourth. McCullough closed out the scoring with his second of the day and the Black Knights cruised to the 16-5 win on the road.Â
