Women's Lax Tripped Up By No. 17 Rutgers
February 16, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach, Michelle Tumolo, and her team have plenty of things to be excited about moving forward. After dropping its season opener, Army West Point women's lacrosse was back on the field tonight against another nationally ranked opponent in No. 17 Rutgers.
The Black Knights (0-2, 0-0 Patriot) were not able to upset the Scarlet Knights (2-0, 0-0 B1G), but the team fought hard, battling in a loss. The score, however, did not indicate how close the contest truly was. Army was within two goals of the lead at the end of the third quarter but were unable to stop the Rutgers run as the B1G team went on to win, 16-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army and No. 17 Rutgers met on the lacrosse field for the first time ever on Wednesday night under the lights at SHI stadium. The Black Knights came out running, scoring the first goal of the game off a shot from Carleigh Armstrong. The Army defense matched the offensive energy, holding Rutgers to zero shot attempts through the first five minutes of game action.
Army would put four more shots on goal and add another tally on the scoreboard, courtesy of Malina Hatton, in the first period.
The Cadets continued to work in the second period, opening up the scoring with an early goal from Julia Gorajek. After Kathleen Sullivan found the back of the net to give Army its fourth score of the game, Gorajek scored her second goal of the night with just nine seconds left in the first half. The goal cut the deficit to just two goals, as Army trailed at the halfway point, 7-5.
Lacey Bartholomay recorded four of her 10 saves in the second quarter to keep it close heading into the second half.
Kathleen Sullivan was the star of the third quarter for Army. The junior played a part in all four scoring plays in the period, netting three goals herself and assisting on the fourth goal after connecting with Caroline Raymond for a terrific one-touch goal midway through the quarter. Sullivan;s fourth goal of the game came with only 1:23 remaining in the period and brought the score to 11-9 going into the final frame.
Rutgers used a 5-0 run to close out the game and seal the win over Army.
