Tumolo, Women's Lacrosse Earn First Win in Home Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point women's lacrosse picked up its first win of the 2022 campaign with a 13-12 win over Hofstra inside Foley Athletic Center on Saturday. The game was delayed and moved indoors after snow covered Michie Stadium and forced the game to the indoor facility.
Army battled throughout the entirety of the game, matching Hofstra stride for stride and eventually erasing a late three-goal deficit to emerge as the victors with a 13-12 win. Coach Michelle Tumolo was credited with her first win at the helm of the program with result that was fueled by four goals from Caroline Raymond and Jolie Riedell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Army West Point Black Knights fell behind early after Hofstra struck first three minutes into the action. Jolie Riedell answered quickly for Army, scoring a goal just a mintue later to tie the game. Caroline Raymond followed up with a goal of her own two minutes later to give Army an early 2-1 lead. Hofstra did not go away, as the Pride rattled off four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
Julia Gorajek and Carleigh Armstrong answered with back-to-back goals at the start of the second quarter to cut the lead to 5-4. The Pride would get the final two goals of the quarter to go into the half leading, 7-4.
Armstrong scored her second goal of the game to kick off the second half and bring the score to 7-5. Hofstra answered with another goal to make it 8-5 before Army strung together three-straight goals to tie the game at 8-8. Riedell ran through the defense to score the first two goals and Raymond got the tying score wiht 6:14 left in the period. Once again, the Pride was able to answer with a pair of goals to end the third quarter with a 10-8 lead.
Hofstra struck first to open up the final quarter, but after that it was all Army. Caroline Raymond added two more tallies for the Black Knights, her third and fourth goals of the game, before Armstrong tied the game at 11 with 7:37 to go in regulation. The Cadets dug in defensively, led by a strong showing by Julia Franzoni who helped Army control four key draws down the stretch to maintain possession and keep Hofstra off the board.
Julia Gorajek finally put Army on top with six minutes remaining in the final quarter after finding the back of the net for the second time in the contest. Riedell followed up with her fourth goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, to give Army a 13-11 advantage.
Hofstra wasn't done just yet, as the Pride got a goal back to make it 13-12 with 1:25 remaining. After Army took control of the ensuing draw, the team got the ball into the stick of Jolie Riedell, who was able to run off a majority of the game clock and seal the win for the Black Knights.
The result went down as the first win of the season for Army and the first victory in the Michelle Tumolo - The Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach - era.
