Army Topped by Hawai’i in High Scoring Affair

HONOLULU – The Army West Point football team fell to Hawai'i, 52-31, on the road Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
Christian Anderson entered the game to replace Kelvin Hopkins Jr. in the second quarter and logged a career-high 114 rushing yards.
Sandon McCoy posted a career-high in rushing yardage as well with 91. He was the only Black Knight to register two touchdowns.
On defense, it was all about Cedrick Cunningham Jr. who posted nine tackles, a career best. Malkelm Morrison was also a standout on the night registering six solo tackles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- On the first play of the game, senior Kelvin Hopkins, Jr. found Artice Hobbs IV for 69 yards to set up McCoy who crossed the goal line to put Army ahead 7-0 within the first 1:44 of the action.
- The Black Knights' defense held strong on the ensuing Hawai'i drive holding the Rainbow Warriors to a field goal.
- On its next offensive possession, Army picked up three more points thanks to a 33-yard field goal by David Cooper.
- The Cadets ate up 6:14 of the clock on the drive which included a 35-yard breakaway run by Hopkins to the Rainbow Warriors' 28-yard line.
- Hawai'i answered back quickly with a two-play, 56-yard drive spanning 55 seconds to tie things up at 10-10.
- The second quarter began with an Army touchdown 2:20 into the frame after the team strung together a 75-yard drive.
- McCoy charged through a tackle to start the second quarter gaining 40 yards to the Hawai'i 10-yard line.
- He then carried the ball into the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown rush to give the Black Knights a 17-10 advantage.
- The Rainbow Warriors took advantage of an Army turnover and scored on the next play to tie things up with 8:08 left in the half.
- Hawai'i took its first lead of the night on a Jason Sharsh receiving touchdown to make it 24-17 heading into the half.
- The Rainbow Warriors found the end zone again to start off the second half to take the 31-17 lead, but the Cadets fought back with a score nearly two minutes later.
- Slomka broke free for a 30-yard rushing touchdown with 10:49 on the clock to cut the Hawai'i lead to seven at 31-24.
- The Rainbow Warriors occupied 5:19 of the clock during an 11-play, 73-yard scoring drive to lift Hawai'i to a 38-24 advantage in the third.
- Army brought things within a touchdown thanks to a 10-yard rush by Malik Hancock, which was his first career rushing score.
- Hawai'i controlled the fourth quarter with two touchdowns to close out the game.
- First was a score through the air off a 20-yard pass. The Rainbow Warriors followed that up with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown to make 52-31.
