Army Falls to No. 13 Loyola in PL Opener
March 17, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-3 decision at 13th-ranked Loyola in its Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-0 lead roughly 12 minutes into the game before rookie Jackie Brattan cracked the scoresheet for the Black Knights. The Garden City, N.Y., native took the feed from Maddie Miller and caged her 14th goal of the season.
Loyola responded with four more before the break as the home team held an 11-1 edge through the first 30 minutes of play. After a Greyhound score inside the first minute of the second half, the Black Knights scored back-to-back goals from Brattan and Rachel Hornick. Brattan potted an unassisted tally for her second of the game with 25:20 remaining before Hornick netted a free-position score nearly seven minutes later.
That would be as close as Army would get, however, as Loyola closed out the game with three more scores to capture the win.

WHAT'S THE WORD?
- Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kristen Skiera - "Today's game was helpful in that it gives us some direction moving forward with the areas we need to hone in on heading into remainder of conference play. Our slow start was hard to overcome, but I was pleased with the adjustments we were able to make on the draw and on defense that enabled us to play Loyola tightly in the second half. Winning the draw control battle against Loyola should give us a ton of confidence moving forward. I felt we fell short today on ground balls and clears, and really took too long for us to find our groove on the offensive end. So far this year we have been successful when we have seven or more scorers contributing on offense. Today we didn't get the variety of contributions that we really needed in order to generate more high quality shots."
- Fr. Attack Jackie Brattan - "We were able to come out much stronger in the second half and, even though we were down by so much, we were able to pick ourselves up and play a better game. By the second half, we were able to create more opportunities to cage and in a few instances finish on those opportunities. The shots were there, so if we keep working on finishing against talented, aggressive teams, naturally those shots will become goals."
