March 24, 2018 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team defeated American 17-8 for the program's first-ever Patriot League win at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Knights earned their second league win in as many seasons after topping Colgate, 11-9, on April 19 in Hamilton, N.Y., last year.
Rookie Jackie Brattan opened the scoring with a tally less than two minutes into the contest on a feed from Samantha Stewart. After the Eagles responded with 20:34 on the clock to tie the game at one apiece, Maddie Miller found a cutting Manuela Cortes to retake the lead. The Miller goal sparked a scoring frenzy between the two sides, combining for three goals over a 2:21 span.
The two sides traded the first six goals of the game before the Black Knights sparked a 5-0 run, including four straight to close out the first half. Stewart caged her second of a game-high four goals to begin the rally before Brattan, Megan Raftery and Amy Johnston sent Army into the break with a 7-3 advantage. Johnston capped the sequence with her second of the afternoon 23 seconds into the final period.
The Eagles stormed back, however, rattling off five of the next six goals to trim Army's lead down to one, 9-8.
Noto Family Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kristen Skiera strategically called a timeout after American's eighth goal to gather the troops and refocus the team for the final 14:19 of the game. This move payed off in a big way for the third-year coach as the veteran leadership of Miller, Johnston, Hornick and Stewart provided four insurance goals over the next 3:41 to give the home side some breathing room at 13-8.
After battling back and forth for a while, Army pulled away late with quartet of scores in the final 4:37 of the game. American was never able to recover.
Stewart, Cortes and Johnston all recorded hat tricks in the game, while Hornick and Brattan added multi-goal efforts for the Black Knights. Rookies Cameron Manor and Megan Raftery also scored off the bench. Miller dished out a game-high three assists.
