HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sacramento State plated an early run in the bottom half of the first, but Army quickly tied it up in the second. It started with a Cole single to left and Swafford drawing a base-on-balls with one out in the inning. The two moved over on a Snelling ground out to first. and Cole came in to score after back-to-back walks were issued.
- The Hornets retook the lead after the leadoff hitter in the second singled and later scored on an RBI single up the middle. Army's bats got hot in the fourth though and the game began to unfold in the Black Knights' favor.
- The bases were loaded for Army with just one out in the inning before Carrie Reilly rocketed a ball into right to drive in the game-tying run. The Cadets tried to squeak another run in on the play, but the runner was thrown out at the plate by a clean throw from the Sacramento State center fielder. However, despite the second out of the inning being recorded, Army was just getting started.
- Ballesteros dropped a ball into center and two runs came in to score, pushing the Cadets ahead 4-2. Ballesteros did not remain on the basepaths for long as she too scored once Cole belted an RBI two-bagger into right center. Amelia Trotter then stepped into the batter's box and singled through the right side, moving Cole over to third. Trotter went to swipe second and the Hornets' catcher sailed the throw high, allowing Cole to score and Trotter to advance.
- One final run crossed in the inning for Army to cap an eventful fourth that featured six runs on 11 hits that left the Black Knights on top, 7-2.
- Sacramento State only manufactured three more hits in the final four frames. The Hornets plated a run in the sixth and the seventh to make it a three-run game, but Renee Poirier closed the door on the Sacramento State offense with a strikeout in the seventh to pick up the save and hand Army its second win of the year.
