Late Run Puts UConn Past Army, 2-1
February 11, 2018 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A single run by UConn in the seventh inning helped the Huskies squeak past the Army West Point softball team, 2-1, on the final day of the River City Leadoff Sunday morning.
Courtney Springman got the starting nod for the Black Knights (1-4) and kept the Huskie (3-2) bats in check for most of the game. The first-year pitcher allowed just two earned runs and four hits while fanning five batters in seven innings.
At the plate, Carrie Reilly went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and a pair of singles. She was one of four Cadets to record a hit against UConn.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Springman made her second start of the season and tied her career-high in strikeouts.
- She only allowed one hit and one run through the first six innings.
- Reilly recorded her first career multi-hit game.
- Kristen McPeek has reached base safely in five straight games.
- The senior has recorded a hit in four of five outings.
- Madison Cole tallied her second straight game with a double.
- UConn's leadoff hitter in the second was hit by a pitch and following a single up the middle and a walk, the bases were loaded with no outs. The ensuing batter drew a base on balls and the first run of the game crossed the plate to give the Huskies a 1-0 advantage.
- In the sixth, UConn made a pitching change and Army jumped on the new pitcher immediately once Reilly recorded her third hit of the morning. Julia Wyatt came in to pinch run for Reilly and scored the game-tying run once Cole doubled into left.
- The Huskies came up in the seventh and finally strung together some hits against Springman. UConn loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles and a walk. With three runners on, a ball was put in play, but the runner at third was called out at the plate. However, the Huskies took a one-run lead, 2-1, after an infield single to the left side allowed a run to score. Â
