Softball Splits Doubleheader in Wilmington; Falls to Toledo, Brings Down UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Army West Point softball (8-10) saw a 1-1 record in day two of action at Boseman Field, first falling to the University of Toledo Rockets (2-17), 8-13 in an offensive slugfest, then earned its second comeback eight-inning victory of the weekend against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (11-10), 3-2.
When facing off against the Rockets, Army battled back multiple times but ultimately fell to Toledo, 13–8, in a high-scoring contest. Army collected several key hits in the game, including RBIs from Coonfare, Sigler, Bonsignore, Sims and Tepley, but Toledo's late offensive surge proved too much as the Rockets pulled away in the final innings.
Against the Seahawks, Army rode a dominant complete-game performance from Katelyn Flanders and a late offensive push to defeat UNC Wilmington, 3–2, in eight innings.
A pair of Army sophomore led the Black Knights' battery in day two of action, with Maisi Sigler and Sienna Tepley each adding three hits, with the two batting .429 and .375, respectively. Sigler also added a team-high two RBIs on the day.
Eight more Black Knights added hits on the day, with five adding two hits each and three adding one hit each. Samantha Sims, Caitlyn Newburn, Breanna Coonfare, Mia Bonsignore and Ashton White were the five with two hits. Coonfare and Bonsignore also added two RBIs apiece. Taylor Brown, Tayten Moore and Emma Murchison all had one hit on the day.
Katelyn Flanders was the star in the circle for the Black Knights, earning the start against the Seahawks and pitching all eight innings. She went on to finish the game with a 1.75 ERA, only allowing two earned runs, adding four strikeouts over 32 at bats. With those numbers, she got her second win of the season.
Breanna Izzo, Ashlyn Wright and Kendall Holloway, who made her first pitching appearance of here collegiate career, shared pitching duties against Toledo combining to allow 14 hits and 13 earned runs. Izzo earned the start added four strikeouts in 4.2 innings, but went on to be pitcher of record, receiving the loss.
GAME 1
The Rockets struck first in the opening inning. Samantha Bolding doubled to left field and moved to third on a wild pitch before Audrey Miller delivered an RBI infield single through the left side to give Toledo a 1–0 lead.
Army responded immediately in the bottom half. Sienna Tepley and Taylor Brown both drew walks to start the inning, and after another walk to Caitlyn Newburn loaded the bases, Breanna Coonfare delivered a clutch double down the left-field line that scored Tepley and Brown, giving the Black Knights a 2–1 lead.
Toledo answered in the second inning with a big rally. After loading the bases, the Rockets tied the game on a sacrifice fly before Bolding came through again with a two-run single to center field, pushing Toledo in front 4–2.
Army chipped away at the deficit in the fourth inning. Maisi Sigler ignited the rally with a triple down the right-field line and later scored on Mia Bonsignore's RBI single to right field, trimming the deficit to 4–3.
The Rockets extended their lead again in the fifth. After a single and stolen base put a runner in scoring position, Alexis Shepherd singled to drive in a run. Then Army had its first pitching change of the game, replacing Breanna Izzo with Ashlyn Wright. Later in the inning, Jenna Gober added another RBI single to push the Toledo advantage to 6–3.
The Black Knights responded again in the bottom of the fifth. Ashton White and Caitlyn Newburn opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Coonfare advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Sigler followed with a clutch two-run single down the right-field line to score White and Newburn, cutting the deficit to 6–5.
However, Toledo broke the game open in the sixth inning with a decisive rally. After a double and a walk put runners aboard, Shepherd drove in a run after being hit by a pitch. Payton Pudlowski then delivered the biggest blow of the game with a three-run triple to right-center.
After the Rockets' triple, Army made its second pitching change of the game, replacing Wright with Kendall Holloway, making his first career appearance. Toledo would tack on one more run, scoring on a wild pitch to cap a five-run inning that stretched the Rockets' lead to 11–5.
Army would go scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, then Toledo added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Miller, making the score 13–5.
Army continued to fight in the bottom of the seventh. Newburn opened the inning with a single, and the Black Knights loaded the bases with consecutive hits by Sigler and Emma Murchison.
Bonsignore drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Sims followed with an RBI single, and Tepley reached on an error that allowed another run to score, trimming the deficit to 13–8. The rally ended there, however, as Toledo recorded the final out to secure the win.
GAME 2
Flanders set the tone early in the circle, working around traffic in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless. UNC Wilmington put runners on with walks in both frames, but Flanders remained composed and stranded multiple baserunners to prevent an early breakthrough.
The Seahawks eventually broke through in the third inning. Emily Whitwell singled and later moved into scoring position before Averie Daughtry delivered an RBI single through the left side, giving UNC Wilmington a 1–0 lead. Despite the run, Flanders continued to limit the damage and quickly settled back in, keeping the Seahawks off the board for the remainder of regulation.
Army's offense struggled to break through for much of the game, though the Black Knights created a few opportunities. Mia Bonsignore and Tayten Moore opened the third inning with back-to-back singles, and later Sienna Tepley and Ashton White recorded hits in the sixth, but UNC Wilmington's defense turned key outs to maintain its narrow lead.
Meanwhile, Flanders continued to dominate in the circle. The Army right-hander worked efficiently through the middle innings, mixing strikeouts and weak contact while repeatedly escaping potential threats. Her steady performance allowed the Black Knights to stay within striking distance.
Army finally broke through in the seventh inning. Breanna Coonfare singled to start the rally and later came around to score when Samantha Sims reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in a defensive miscue, tying the game at 1–1.
Flanders then delivered another clutch inning in the bottom of the seventh. After UNC Wilmington put a runner aboard with a bunt single and later reached on an error, the Army ace kept her composure and induced the final out to strand two runners and send the game to extra innings.
Army's offense capitalized again in the top of the eighth. With Sims placed on second base to start the inning, Tepley dropped down a bunt single to move the runner to third.
After Taylor Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases, pressure on the defense led to a pair of costly mistakes. A wild pitch and throwing error allowed both Brown and Tepley to score, giving the Black Knights a 3–1 advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth, Flanders returned to finish what she started. UNC Wilmington managed to score once on an RBI single by Ava Brookshire, but the Army pitcher quickly regrouped and induced a groundout to third to seal the win.
ON DECK
The Black Knights will play one more game on Sunday morning to close their time in Wilmington, playing UNC Greensboro for the second time in three days.
Army shoots to go 2-0 against the Spartans on the weekend after the Black Knights rallied late after being down 0-3 and completed a dramatic comeback to defeat UNC Greensboro, 4–3, on a walk-off single in extra innings on Friday.
