March 06, 2026 | Softball
WILMINGTON, N.C. — Army West Point softball (7-9) opened its weekend at Boseman Field with two wins, earning a win over the University of Toledo Rockets (1-17), 2-0, then gaining a walk-off victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans (14-9), 4-3.
In game one against the Rockets, Army finished with six hits in the contest, highlighted by multi-hit performances from Coonfare and Newburn, while Coonfare and Newburn each drove in a run. The Black Knights' pitching staff combined to hold Toledo scoreless and strand multiple runners, sealing the 2–0 win.
Meanwhile, in game two, Army rallied late after being down 0-3 and completed a dramatic comeback to defeat UNC Greensboro, 4–3, on a walk-off single in extra innings. Army's late rally, highlighted by Coonfare's two-run single and White's game-winning hit, completed the comeback after trailing by three runs and secured the extra-inning win.
Breanna Coofare highlighted the offensive unit, finishing the day with four hits while batting .667 on the day, also earning three RBIs and two stolen bases. Ashton White was right behind Coonfare, adding three hits while batting .429, plus two runs and an RBI.
Sienna Tepley and Caitlyn Newburn each added two hits, with Newburn also adding an RBI. Emma Murchison and Maisi Sigler both added one hit each against the Spartans, plus Taylor Brown finished the day with two runs and two stolen bases through the two games.
On the pitching side, Amanda Eaglin, Katelyn Flanders and Breanna Izzo each made appearances through the day for the Black Knights.
Amanda Eaglin started against the Rockets, finishing the day by allowing only two hits with no runs with three strikeouts in five innings of work, earning the win over Toledo.
Breanna Izzo earned the starting nod against the Spartans, finishing the day pitching six innings while throwing six strikeouts. With those strikeouts, Izzo eclipsed the 250 career strikeouts milestone, becoming the sixth player in Army softball history to reach the mark.
Katelyn Flanders made two appearances in relief, earning a save against the Rockets and earning the win over the Spartans. She finished the day pitching four innings, only allowing three hits while logging zero runs and three strikeouts.
GAME 1
The Black Knights struck first at the top of the first inning. Sienna Tepley opened the game with an infield single before Taylor Brown reached on a fielder's choice. Brown advanced aggressively on the bases, moving to second on a groundout by Ashton White and then stealing third.
Caitlyn Newburn delivered the first run of the game with a single up the middle to score Brown, giving Army a 1–0 lead. Breanna Coonfare followed with an infield single to keep the inning alive, but Toledo escaped further damage with a strikeout.
Army starter Amanda Eaglin controlled the game from the circle early. In the bottom of the first, Toledo put a runner on with a walk, but Eaglin worked around it with a sacrifice bunt and two outs recorded on a strikeout and flyout to keep the Rockets off the board.
Toledo threatened again in the third when Samantha Bolding doubled down the left-field line, but Army's defense responded with consecutive flyouts to strand the runner and preserve the lead.
The Black Knights looked to add insurance throughout the middle innings. Coonfare singled in the fourth and later stole second, though Toledo's defense prevented a run.
Army finally extended its lead in the sixth inning. Ashton White sparked the rally by tripling down the right-field line with one out. After Newburn grounded out, Coonfare came through again, lining an RBI double to left field to score White and push Army's advantage to 2–0.
In the circle, Army maintained control late in the game. Katelyn Flanders entered in relief during the sixth inning and navigated a small threat after Toledo put two runners on with consecutive singles. She induced a fielder's choice to end the inning and keep the shutout intact.
Toledo mounted its final opportunity in the bottom of the seventh when Payton Pudlowski doubled to left field to lead off the inning. After a flyout, Bolding worked a walk to put two runners on. However, Army's defense held firm as Enriquez grounded out, advancing the runners but recording the second out, and Jenna Gober popped up to second base to end the game.
GAME 2
The game began as a pitcher's duel, with both teams going quietly in the first inning. Army starter Breanna Izzo set the tone early, striking out the side of the Spartans' lineup in the opening frame, while the Black Knights were retired in order in the bottom half.
UNC Greensboro broke through in the second inning. Laney Deane doubled down the left-field line and moved to third on a wild pitch before Macy Michael struck out. Jazmin Mejia then delivered an RBI single up the middle to score the run and give the Spartans a 1–0 lead.
The Spartans extended their advantage in the fourth. Nya South launched a solo home run to right-center to make it 2–0. Later in the inning, a pair of Army defensive errors allowed Mejia to reach and advance, and Hadley Gardner followed with an RBI single to left that scored Mejia, pushing the UNC Greensboro lead to 3–0.
Army's offense struggled to find momentum through the middle innings, but the Black Knights began to threaten in the fifth when Maisi Sigler walked and Emma Murchison singled. However, UNC Greensboro escaped the inning to keep the three-run cushion intact.
The turning point came in the sixth inning. After two quick outs, Ashton White sparked the rally with a single to left field. Caitlyn Newburn followed with a double into left-center, putting runners at second and third.
Breanna Coonfare then came through in the clutch, lining a two-run single to left that scored White and pinch runner Tayten Moore, cutting the deficit to 3–2. Moments later, Coonfare aggressively stole third base and scored the tying run on a wild pitch, evening the score at 3–3.
Army's pitching staff shut the door from there. Izzo worked into the seventh before Katelyn Flanders entered in relief and delivered a clean inning, stranding a runner after a walk by retiring the final batter on a strikeout to send the game to extras.
In the eighth inning, Army's defense held firm. The Spartans placed a runner on second, but the Black Knights prevented any damage as Flanders induced a groundout before retiring the next two batters to strand the runner at third.
Army capitalized in the bottom half. Taylor Brown started the inning at second base and immediately stole third to put the winning run 60 feet away. With the infield drawn in, Ashton White delivered the decisive hit, lining a single to score Brown and give the Black Knights a 4–3 walk-off victory.
