Softball Falls in Pitcher's Duel Against UNC Greensboro
March 08, 2026 | Softball
WILMINGTON, N.C. — Army West Point softball (8-11) closed its time in the Tar Heel State on Sunday taking on the UNC Greensboro Spartans (15-11), battling but falling in a narrow 0-2 loss.
Army was locked in a tight pitcher's duel behind a strong outing from Amanda Eaglin, but UNC Greensboro used a late extra-base hit in the sixth inning to pull away for the 2–0 win.
The Black Knights offense was kept in check through the matchup, with Army only earning one hit through the seven innings of play. Ashton White was the cadet-athlete who got the hit, a single in the top of the first. Only two others got on by drawing walks, Sienna Tepley and Caitlyn Newburn.
Amanda Eaglin finished the game pitching six innings only allowing four hits and two earned runs, the runs coming in the bottom of the sixth. She earned four strikeouts while only logging two walks. Despite the strong performance, she went on to receive the loss.
How It Happened
The Black Knights had an early chance in the top of the first when Ashton White singled to left-center with two outs, but the inning ended before Army could move the runner into scoring position. Throughout the game, UNC Greensboro's pitching limited Army's offense, keeping the Black Knights from stringing together multiple hits.
Meanwhile, Eaglin kept Army in the game with a steady performance in the circle. The right-hander worked efficiently through the first several innings, mixing strikeouts and weak contact while consistently pitching out of trouble.
In the first inning, she worked around a leadoff infield single before the Army defense helped erase the runner with a caught stealing through a throw from home plate from Emma Murchison. Eaglin then settled in and retired the Spartans in order in both the second and third innings.
Army created another opportunity in the fourth inning when Caitlyn Newburn drew a walk and moved into scoring position. Mia Bonsignore later reached on an error, allowing Newburn to advance to third, but UNC Greensboro escaped the jam with a pop-up to keep the game scoreless.
Eaglin continued to control the Spartans' lineup through the middle innings. She worked around a one-out walk in the fifth and stranded runners in the fourth as well, limiting hard contact and keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard deep into the game.
UNC Greensboro finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a single and a walk put two runners on, Laney Deane delivered the decisive swing, lining a double to right-center that brought both runners home and gave the Spartans a 2–0 lead.
The Black Knights were unable to respond in the top of the seventh, going three and out, allowing the Spartans to retire the side and secure the 2–0 victory over Army.
