MIAMI – After a stellar start to the 2018-19 season, the Army West Point men's swim and dive team sits in first place through the opening day of the TYR Fall Classic at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
With 246 points, the Black Knights hold a slim two-point lead over Grand Canyon (244), with George Washington trailing right behind with 220.5 points. TCU (197.5) and Old Dominion (189) rounded out the top-five following one day of competition.

"It was a great day of competition," head coach Mickey Wender said. "It's exciting to have the season finally underway and I am very proud of the team's performance today. We raced hard and put ourselves in a good spot at the midway point. We learned a lot about who we are and are really looking forward to day two."

ARMY NOTABLES
- Army won three events on the opening day of the meet.
- The foursome of Brian McKenrick, Ty Dang, Johnny Ellery and Nathan Hein picked up a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay after they posted a time of 3:23.53.Â
- The group of Josh Zock, Kevin Doo, Hein and Tom Ottman placed third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.83.
- Ottman claimed the top spot in the 200 free (1:40.96).
- Doo scored well for the Black Knights after placing second in the 100 fly (48.83) and winning the B-final 100 breast (56.74).
- Jay Yang bested the competition in the 400 IM with his time of 3:58.92.
- Dang took first in the 100 breast with a time of 57.80, while also winning the B-final in the 400 IM after touching the wall at 3:58.92.
- Hein's time of 21.36 in the 50 free awarded him a third-place finish.
- McKenrick placed fourth in the 100 back with a time of 51.91. Â
- On the 3-meter board, Hudson Kay totaled 215.20 points, which was good for fourth.
