WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three Army West Point athletic teams were rewarded by the NCAA for their outstanding performance in the classroom after earning Public Recognition Awards from the governing body.
Men's tennis, women's tennis and wrestling were among 1,203 teams that were publicly recognized for their academic achievement. It was based on their most recent Academic Progress Rate. The Patriot League posted the second-highest percentage of its teams receiving APR awards at 46 percent behind the Ivy League at 48 percent.
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally.
The 1,203 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 746 women's teams and 457 men's or mixed squads. This year, the total number of teams being recognized increased by 132 from last year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores.
The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 1,090 teams.
All Division I teams' APR scores will be released May 10. All teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
The APR, which is in its 12th year, measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
