February 18, 2016 | Men's Swimming and Diving
DAY TWO RESULTS
Â
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – After the first full day of the Patriot League Championships, the Army West Point men's swimming and diving team moved up to second in the rankings with 208 points. The Black Knights recorded an Academy and two plebe records on the night.
Â
"We had a good second day at the championship meet," said head coach Mickey Wender. "I was very pleased with our performance this morning with a large amount of lifetime best swims. It was a great team approach and I thought we executed well. We had a few things that we didn't get right tonight, but it was a great day overall. We are in a good spot and we definitely have our opportunities as we hit day three."
Â
Brandon McCredie won both the preliminaries and finals in the 50 free. The freshman recorded a first-place plebe record time of 20.10 in the morning session, and a first-place time of 20.13 in the evening session. Chris Szekely was eighth after clocking a 20.50, and Nick Treiberg (20.85) and Austin Kong (21.12) finished 14th and 16th.
Â
"I was extremely proud of Brandon for winning his first Patriot League title in the 50 free," said Wender. "He is a strong hard working kid with a great career ahead of him."
Â
Jay Yang clocked an Academy, plebe and NCAA B-Cut time in the 200 IM for the Black Knights. He finished in 1:48.84 to place fifth and was followed by Sam Mo (1:50.26) who was eighth. Sean Regan (1:50.75) and Matt McPheters (1:51.10) were 12th and 13th in the event, respectively.
Â
"I am also proud of all of those who set records for us today," added Wender. "Jay Yang and Sidney Evans were two plebes who did a tremendous job in the 200 IM. Jay broke the record back in the beginning of the season and was able to re-break it both this morning and at night so he is doing great things for us. Kelly Hamilton is racing particularly hard even though she is fighting some ailments alonside Chris Szekely who has overcome a significant injury."
Â
Tom Ottman was Army's top finisher in the 500 free. He placed sixth with a time of 4:25.57. During the preliminaries, the freshman set a new plebe standard with a time of 4:25.96. Evin Rude was ninth with a time of 4:29.38, while Clay Harmon (4:33.13) was 13th.
Â
The Black Knights closed-out the evening session with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Josh Sembrano, Joseph Daniels, Kong and Szekely teamed up to touch the wall in 3:15.56.Â
