Golf to Open Season at Historic Bethpage Course
September 10, 2015 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Led by head coach Brian Watts, the Army West Point golf team is set to make its 2015 debut at the Doc Gimmler on Sept. 12-13 at the historic Bethpage State Course.
"We're looking forward to the first event at Bethpage Red," said Watts. "It is a great course to start the year off which as it has yielded some low scores in the years past. In preparation we've had five rounds of qualifying and the team will be ready to compete."
The Black Knights will utilize the five-man team of yearling Dean Sakata, cow Peter Kim, firstie Marcus Plunkett and plebes Nick Turner and Matt Plunkett.
"It is an exciting time of the year as everyone is anxious to start competing again," said Watts. "The rigorous mental and physical training that our young men have conducted throughout the summer will pay dividends out on the course. Our team doesn't have the ability to play and practice all summer, so we use the summer training as tool to aid life skills that we all need to compete at the highest level."
Bethpage Red plays at 70-par, a distance of 7,014 yards and was opened in 1933. The famed Bethpage Black Course hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open events and most recently, The Barclays in 2012.
Army is one of 10 schools participating in this weekend's event, which will include 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. In addition to the Black Knights and host Red Storm, Colgate, Columbia, Harvard, IUPUI, Johnson & Wales, St. Thomas Aquinas and the defending champion, Yale will be attending.
Last year at the Doc Gimmler, Army finished in fourth of 14 with team scores of 277-276-280 – 833 (-7). Sakata led Army's efforts by carding a 206 (-4) to place tied for seventh.
