Early Leads Lifts Bucknell Past Baseball
April 11, 2015 | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. - After taking the series opener in extra innings, Bucknell built an 8-0 lead through the first five innings and defeated the Army baseball team 10-2 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Depew Field.
Bucknell moved into a tie with Army at 3-7 in the Patriot League standings with the result. The Bison sit at 17-15 on the year, while Army fell to 15-16.
"It was a tough first game, we had our opportunities in that game and it just didn't go our way," head coach Matt Reid said. "Alex Robinett threw a very competitive game for us. The great thing about baseball is that we play four games in two days. We are fortunate to be able to go out tomorrow and have the opportunity to play two more games."
Bucknell starting pitcher Xavier Hammond surrendered two runs over 7.2 innings en route his fourth victory of the season. Hammond allowed nine base hits and fanned five without walking a batter. Relief pitcher Max Kra closed out the game by retiring the only four batters he faced.
The home team got to Army starter Julian Larimer with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brett Smith walked to begin the rally and two batters later Joe Ogren's double put the Bison on the board. An infield single, followed by Jon Mayer's sacrifice fly made it 2-0 with two outs. A single, plus an error put runners at second and third for Rob Krentzman, who doubled the lead with a two-run single through the hole on the left side.
Krentzman added to Bucknell's lead with an RBI double in the third and scored on a base hit by Mark Powell that pushed the advantage to 6-0 at that point. The lead ballooned to eight runs in the bottom of the fifth when Smith and Anthony Gingerelli each drove in runs, which were charged to Larimer (0-4). The Army right-hander gave up seven earned runs on 14 hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He was relieved by Stu Schley, who pitched two innings and allowed one run on two hits.
Ben Smith's second single of the contest put him on with one out in the top of the sixth and two batters later, Jacob Page launched a two-run shot that put the Black Knights on the board. Alex Dickerson also had two hits for Army in the loss.
Bucknell added another run off of freshman relief pitcher Matt Ball, who allowed four hits. As a team, the Bison totaled 19 hits, with Ogren, Mayer and Danny Rafferty responsible for three apiece.
The two teams continue the series on Sunday afternoon at noon. The first game of the doubleheader will be a seven-inning affair, followed by the nine-inning series finale.
Game Notes: Mark McCants extended his hitting streak to nine games ... Jacob Page's hitting streak reached six games ... Page hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
