Baseball Drops Midweek Contest vs. Marist
April 21, 2026 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point baseball dropped Tuesday's game to the Marist Red Foxes at Doubleday Field, 5-4, after allowing three runs in the top of the ninth.
Â
The Black Knights move to 22-17 with the loss, ahead of its second-to-last league series and final home set this weekend.Â
Â
Army opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, when Josiah Overbeek bolted home on a wild pitch.Â
Â
While the Red Foxes tied the game in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, the Black Knights prevented the visitors from going ahead later in the frame, when relief pitcher Max Donecea recovered from a wild pitch by racing to the plate and making the tag for the third out.Â
Â
After Parker gave Army the lead once more in the fifth with a sacrifice fly for Overbeek's second run of the game, Donecea once more kept Marist off the board in the sixth, escaping a bases loaded, one out jam with a strikeout and induced lineout to strand all three runners.Â
Â
The parade of sacrifice RBIs continued in the sixth, with Paul Andrzejewski collecting a sacrifice fly and Chris Barr scoring Jake Pineda on a squeeze bunt to make it 4-1.
Â
Marist threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with nobody out to put the go-ahead run at the plate. Anthony Ramirez then entered to pitch, with just one run scoring in the frame on a sacrifice fly before the visitors took the lead an inning later.
Â
Donecea had been in line for the win, striking out two batters over 2.1 innings. The Northport, N.Y. native took over for starting pitcher Walker Calvo, who too picked up a pair of strikeouts over 3.2 frames. Ian Standlee also pitched an inning in relief before handing the ball to Ramirez.
