Football Celebrates Senior Day, Hosts Rutgers
November 19, 2015 | Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point football team will take part in its final game at Michie Stadium in the 2016 season, hosting Rutgers on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network and the Army Sports Network.
Ben Holden will have the call for CBS Sports Network with Jay Feely providing the color and John Schriffen holding down the sideline. On the Army Sports Network will be play-by-play announcer Rich DeMarco and color analyst Dean Darling with Tony Morino on the sideline.
Army is coming off of a 34-31 loss to Tulane last weekend, as the Green Wave converted a field goal in the final seconds of the game to earn the victory.
"We found a way to battle back and we had it tied at the end, but we just couldn't find a way to keep them from scoring that field goal," said head coach Jeff Monken. "That is the second time that has happened this year, having a ball go through the uprights as time expires. It's a tough way to lose, but I don't know if there is an easy way to lose. We were certainly disappointed, but we turn our sights to Rutgers, which may be the most talented team we face all year."
The game will be the second consecutive in Michie Stadium as the Black Knights will honor the class of 2016 prior to the start of the contest.
Rutgers enters the game with a record of 3-7, including a 1-6 mark in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights are coming off of a 31-14 loss against Nebraska and are in the midst of a four-game skid.
On the ground, Robert Martin paces the offense for the Scarlet Knights with 622 yards on 108 carries (5.8 avg.) for five touchdowns. Josh Hicks also carries a considerable part of the ground game, netting 613 yards on 120 carries (5.1 avg.) with four touchdowns.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback has earned the start in nine of Rutgers' 10 contests, going 153-of-253 with 12 touchdowns and 1,798 yards (179.8 avg.) and 11 interceptions.
"Offensively, they have some good skill players, very big guys on the offensive line and those physical matchups are some things we have to play really close attention to," added Monken. "They have a receiver who is as good as any in the Big Ten and a kick returner who is as good as any in the Big Ten so we will have a lot to work on. We will practice again today. We practiced on Sunday night and today, tomorrow and Thursday and hopefully we will have our team prepared to play on Saturday. It will be the last game at Michie Stadium for these seniors and we would sure like to send them off with a victory."
Defensively, Steve Longa has posted an impressive 111 tackles on the year, making 71 solo stops in addition to 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one quarterback hurry and two forced fumbles. Quentin Gause has recorded 82 tackles with 49 solo stops, 12.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, two pass breakups and three quarterback hurries.
"I'm sure that Coach Flood and his staff is going to have a very good plan for our offense," said Monken. "To be able to pull the film out of previous games, playing against option teams, and their players being able to watch guys in Rutgers uniforms execute those defenses and the coaches talking their language about how that correlates to the things that they do each week against traditional offenses, I think that they will have a good plan and I think that their kids will be able to execute. They're going to be talented enough and physical enough that, even if they haven't practiced those things over-and-over throughout the year, they're going to be able to make up for a lot of that, just because of who they are and who we are."
For Army, quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw sets the pace both on the ground and in the air. The Chicago native has gained 468 yards on the ground off of 130 carries (3.6 avg.) with five touchdowns. He is 23-of-48 on the season with 429 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Fellow quarterback A.J. Schurr adds 384 rushing yards off of 98 carries (3.9 avg.) with seven touchdowns. Running back Aaron Kemper has contributed 447 yards on the ground on 83 carries (5.4 avg.) and two touchdowns.
Defensively, Andrew King leads the way for the Black Knights, recording 80 total tackles, including 47 solo stops, 15.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. Co-captain Jeremy Timpf has made 75 stops, including 40 solo tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, one interception, one pass breakup and one forced fumble.
ARMY-RUTGERS HISTORY
The series between Army and Rutgers dates back to the Cadets' second season in 1891. Army hosted the Scarlet Knights on Nov. 14, 1891 and fell to Rutgers, 27-6, on The Plain. Since the series opener, the two teams have faced off 47 times. The matchup shows the Scarlet Knights ahead at 21-18 and riding a eight-game winning streak into Michie Stadium. This is the 22nd meeting all-time at West Point with Army leading at 13-8. The teams have played 11 neutral site games, including the last two contests in 2010 and 2011.
SHOW OF UNITY
Army was one of many college football teams to show its solidarity with the French people in pregame ceremonies. It is a tradition for Army football to carry the American Flag onto the field along with an Army football black flag. Last Saturday was a little different. Senior Caleb McNeill carried the French Flag onto the field, while one of France's foreign exchange cadets carried the Army football flag onto the field. Senior Jared Rogers was picked to carry the American Flag as part of the pregame tradition.
