Katrina DeKrey joined the Army West Point track program as an assistant coach in September 2022 and will work with the sprints and hurdles groups at West Point.
Prior to joining the Black Knights, DeKrey spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart University. During her time with the Pioneers, she coached all of men's and women's sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps; leading to six school records broken across two seasons (men's indoor 300m dash, women's indoor triple jump, women's outdoor triple jump, men's 400m hurdles, men's indoor 4x400m relay and men's outdoor 4x400 relay). During the 2022 season, she coached the men's 400m hurdles school record holder to the USATF U20 Championship in Eugene, Oregon. In addition to her coaching duties, she served as the program's director of operations; overseeing travel, budget, equipment, social media and academic monitoring for the program. DeKrey was also the associate recruiting coordinator for the track program along with serving as the head of the athletic department's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee.
"Katrina DeKrey had no intentions of pursuing a job search this summer. In fact, I think she was very much looking forward to continuing to build the program at Sacred Heart University." said Director of Track and Field Mike Smith. "It was a difficult separation for her because she was invested in the student athletes there but the allure of the Academy, and the opportunity to work in this environment with the future leaders of our country, was too appealing to pass up. Katrina is a talented young coach with a versatile background of experience coaching and recruiting the speed and power events. She is a studied and patient teacher and has had a great deal of success wherever she has been. She has sought out professional development opportunities at all of her stops and is hungry to learn. She is a future star in our profession. I often remind our staff that what we do here at the Academy is much more than the x's and o's of coaching track and field. We have an awesome responsibility to assist in the leader development process and that has to resonate with our new hires. I know that Katrina understands the difference between 'having to work at West Point' and 'getting to work at West Point' and she is going to make a significant impact on our program. We are lucky to have her here."
Prior to her time at Sacred Heart, DeKrey served as Assistant Track and Field Coach at Nova Southeastern University, where she oversaw training and development for all sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi-event athletes, along with recruiting for each event. DeKrey coached two athletes to the 2018 Division II NCAA National Championships in the men's 200m and women's triple jump. She would coach eight Peach Belt Conference Champions during her tenure with the Sharks. She coached the first ever multi event-athlete in school history to 2019 DII NCAA National Championship in Women's Heptathlon and coached four school record holders. She also served as the Academic Coach, where she oversaw communication between athletes, counselors and coaching staff, as well as monitoring athletes' progress to ensure academic success.
Prior to Nova Southeastern, DeKrey had a three-year stint at Florida International University in Miami, where she was a graduate assistant for the Panthers' cross country and track and field teams. During her tenure at FIU, DeKrey coached four NCAA national qualifiers and five school record holders in multi-events, as well as jumps.
"I am honored and excited to be a part Army West Point track and field. I extended my gratitude to Coach Mike Smith for the opportunity to join the Black Knight coaching staff." said DeKrey.
Before beginning her coaching career, DeKrey competed in the 100m hurdles at the University of Florida in her hometown of Gainesville. She was a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll awardee and earned her undergraduate degree in Sociology from UF in 2014 before going on to earn her Master's degree at FIU in Hospitality and Tourism Management (2017). DeKrey is Level 2 USATF certified in both Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, as well as Jumps. She also holds USTFCCCA Technical Certifications in Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, Sports Science Classroom and Strength and Conditioning.
