BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After strong showings at the West Point Invitational this past Saturday Robby Manse was named the Patriot League Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while Ellie Chapin was named the Women's Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Manse, a senior thrower from Middletown, N.J., put together a very strong showing at the West Point Invitational, taking home a first place and second place finish. Manse won the weight throw with a remarkable mark of 20.20m. The distance – personal best – ranks number one in the Patriot League and is the fifth best throw in Army indoor history.
He also had a strong showing in shot put, posting a second-place finish with a throw of 16.88m. It marked the second-best throw in the Patriot League this season, coming in just behind teammate Matthew Palchak.
"After facing some adversity in the fall training cycle, Robby was rewarded for being patient and trusting the process. Opening the season with a milestone personal best over-20m in the men's 35lb weight throw is a great sign of things to come," said Assistant Coach/Throws Brian Woodbury. "His competitive experience and maturity allow him to be fearless, and that makes anything possible when he steps in the ring."
Chapin, a freshman jumper from Whispering Pines, N.C., posted a strong performance in women's triple jump with a distance of 11.06m. The performance was good for a fourth-place finish in the event and ninth in the Patriot League this season.
"I am very proud of Ellie for earning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, but even more proud of all of the hard work she has put in through this fall. She has made huge strides in the triple jump despite being mainly a high jumper in high school. Ellie understood early on that she can make an impact on this team in multiple events and make herself even more valuable. We are now just seeing the first results of her dedication to that goal as she will continue to develop. Ellie is also ahead of where I expected her to be at this time of the year as she jumped a personal best off a shortened approach in the triple jump. She has adapted well to our training while balancing her hectic life as a cadet at West Point and has the exact mentality we want in a jumper."
The Black Knights return to action this Saturday at the Quaker Invitational hosted by Penn at The Ott Center. The meet will broadcast on ESPN+.
