John Rotella is entering his fifth season with the Army West Point sprint football team as the offensive line coach.
Rotella comes to West Point from William Paterson University, where he most recently served as the offensive coordinator and kicking coach in 2012. He also coaches the Pioneer’s running backs since 2006 where he mentored four All-Conference players including the first 1,000-yard rusher at WPU in 17 years.
A veteran of almost 30 years on the New Jersey sidelines, he started his career at Westwood High School in 1983. After one year at Westwood and one at Midland park H.S., he took his first college job at Ramapo College where he coached the running backs. Rotella became Kenneday High School's (NJ) offensive coordinator in 1987, leading the Knights to a Group-4 state championship victory. He then moved to the other side of the ball as the defensive coordinator and helped lead the Knights back to the playoffs four of the next five years.
Rotella accepted his first head coaching job at Boonton High School in New Jersey, where he stayed for five years before leaving to become the head coach at Demarest High School. After a four-year stint at Demarest, he spent the next three years in the state playoffs with at Ramapo High School (NJ), winning it all again in 2003.
As a player, Rotella was a running back at Ithaca College in the 1978 and 1979 seasons. He earned a Bachelors of Science in Health and Physical Education from Slippery Rock University and a Masters in Administration Supervision from Jersey City State College in 1982.
Rotella is married to his wife, Suesan, and has 2 daughters, Lauren Derasmo and Kaylee Rotella. He lives in Ringwood, N.J.
