Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in Overtime Thriller Against Loyola Maryland

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point men's basketball (7-9, 1-2) saw a second straight loss on Wednesday night inside Christl Arena, facing an overtime loss to the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (5-11, 1-2), 76-84.
With the loss, the Greyhounds even out the series record between the two teams to 13-13. It is also the first loss Army has seen against Loyola Maryland since the 2022-23 season. It is also Army's first loss in a game that went to overtime this season.
Five Black Knights finished the game in double figures. Ryan Curry led the scoring for the third straight game, finishing the game with 19 points while shooting 7-of-17 from the field and 5-of-11 from three-point range, adding three assists and two rebounds.
Kevin McCarthy scored 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting and went 4-of-10 from beyond the arc, contributing four rebounds.
Jackson Furman finished with 12 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Furman also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, earning his first career double-double, the fourth Army player to earn one this season. He also added three assists.
Jacen Holloway recorded 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, dished out three assists, and grabbed three rebounds. Joshua Eli rounded out the group, adding 10 points off the bench, shooting 3-of-6 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range, while collecting seven rebounds and two steals.
How It Happened
Tate Laczkowski started the scoring for Army, making a free throw on Army's first possession. Kevin McCarthy and Ryan Curry both hit three-pointers in the first four minutes. The Greyhounds ended up outscoring Army to take a 12-7 lead over Army with 16:10 on the first half clock.
In the next four minutes, Loyola Maryland slightly outpaced Army, outscoring Army 11-8 to extend their lead to 23-15 with 12:53 left to play in the first frame.
Ryan Curry hit a jumper off the Tate Laczkowski assist, Jacen Holloway added two driving layups, and Jackson Forman added another two points of his own.
Army came storming back in the next three and a half minutes, going on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 25-25 with 7:57 on the first half clock.
The run started with a Jackson Furman layup, then Jacen Holloway added four straight points, assisted by Joshua Eli and Jaxson Bell. Furman hit a three-pointer, and Kevin McCarthy added his second three-pointer.
Army stretched it to a 15-2 run, retaking the lead at 30-25 with 6:36 left in the first half. Kevin McCarthy hit another three-pointer from a Tate Laczkowski assist, and Jackson Furman added a layup.
Loyola Maryland responded in the next two minutes, going on a mini 8-0 run to retake the lead at 33-30 with 4:06 left in the first half.
Army finished strong in the last four minutes of the first half, outpacing the Greyhounds 10-6 to take a slim 40-39 lead into the locker room.
Jacen Holloway added another two points, and Jackson Furman added another two points. Ryan Curry then hit two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions, hitting one through contact, to help take back the lead.
The two teams stayed neck-and-neck with each other to start the second half, with both teams scoring eight points each as Army held onto a 48-47 lead with 15:40 left to play.
Kevin McCarthy picked up right where he left off, nailing another three-pointer, then added a teardrop floater down the lane. Joshua Eli also added a three-pointer from an assist from Jackson Furman.
Over the next four minutes, the Greyhounds came back, outscoring the Black Knights 10-4 to cause Army to fall to a 52-57 deficit.
In the stretch, after Loyola Maryland went on an 8-0 run, Jorn Everson hit a jumper, and Jacen Holloway added two made free throws.
The Black Knights and the Greyhounds paced each other in the next four minutes, both only scoring five points in that stretch, making it a 62-57 game in Loyola Maryland's favor with 7:37 left on the clock.
Jackson Furman added another three-pointer to hit double-digits, and Jacen Holloway hit another layup to also reach double-digits.
Loyola continued to keep Army at arm's length, with both teams only scoring four points each over the next four-minute segment to make it a 66-61 game with four minutes left to play.
Ryan Curry hit a driving layup, and Jacen Holloway hit a layup from an assist off of a drive from Joshua Eli.
In the final four minutes of the second half, the Black Knights rallied back and made several clutch plays to finish regulation outscoring the Greyhounds 12-7.
Kevin McCarthy first hit two free throws, then Joshua Eli hit two free throws to narrow the lead. Joshua Eli then hit a stepback three to cut it to a one-point game.
The Greyhounds hit two free throws to make it a three-point game, giving Army one more chance to tie the game. Ryan Curry dribbled the ball down the court, then hit a highly contested three-pointer to beat the buzzer to tie the game at 73-73 to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, it was the Greyhounds instead of the Black Knights who took over. Loyola Maryland would open the overtime period on a 6-0 run, taking an early three.
Ryan Curry would hit a three-pointer with 90 seconds left in the overtime period, but those points proved to be the only points Army earned. Loyola Maryland would seal the game at the free throw line, making it a final score of 84-76 in the visiting team's favor.

- Army recorded 16 assists on 28 made field goals. Loyola scored 38 points in the paint, outpacing Army's 28 interior points.
- The team committed seven turnovers while forcing 11 turnovers defensively.
