Hockey Upsets No. 12 Northeastern in Stunning 5-2 Win
January 02, 2026 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (6-9-5, 2-8-3 Atlantic Hockey America) welcomed the No. 12 Northeastern Huskies (10-6-0, 5-4-0 Hockey East) to Tate Rink for a Friday night matchup to kick off their 2026 action.
After an early lead for the Huskies, the Black Knights put on a spectacular show at Tate Rink as they delivered five unanswered goals across the second and third periods to earn a 5-2 win over their ranked foe.
JJ Cataldo made his return between the pipes for Army where he posted 25 saves against Northeastern's 27 shots on goal.
The Huskies sent Lawton Zacher out to face the Black Knights and the junior put up 34 saves against Army's 39 shots on goal.
The near-sell-out crowd at Tate Rink were in for a show on Friday night as the two teams met for the second time this season. After Army's 2-1 win in Boston in October the Huskies came to West Point with a vengeance.
The Black Knights, back on their home for the first time in over a month, drove the momentum of the first period as they led the shots on goal throughout the first frame with 12 shots on goal to Northeastern's 11.
Despite Army's aggressive start, the Huskies opened the scoring with a late rush up the ice with a minute and 20 seconds left in the period to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Northeastern carried the momentum with them into the second period, scoring their second goal of the night on the power play five and a half minutes back into the action to go ahead 2-0.
Army kicked things into another gear as they drew three power play opportunities as the clock ticked on, finding paydirt on their third attempt as Ben Ivey sent a pass spearing towards the right side of the crease where Jack Ivey waited to deliver the redirect home.
The Black Knights kept the pressure high, scoring an even-strength goal with 76 seconds left on the clock as Nik Hong and Adam Marshall combined on a breakaway opportunity to bring the game tied heading into the second intermission.
Army maintained the momentum as the third period began with a flurry of faceoff wins and shots on goal for the Black Knights to begin the period before Nils Forselius danced through a pair of Huskies to lift the puck past Lawton's blocker and give Army its first lead of the night shortly before the midpoint of the period.
Just over three minutes later plebe forward Billy Batten earned his place on the scoresheet as he found an open patch of ice and hit a toe drag to slip past Northeastern's defense and fire the puck over Lawton's glove to put Army ahead 4-2.
Northeastern battled hard to regain ground, firing shot after shot at Cataldo that the sophomore netminder turned aside to maintain the Black Knights' advantage.
Brent Keefer earned his third goal in two games with 56 seconds remaining in regulation as he turned on the burners to beat a Husky to the puck deep in the Northeastern defensive zone and earn an empty net goal to secure Army's upset victory.
