Softball Earns Game One Win over Raiders; Clinches Share of Patriot League Regular Season Title

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point Softball (31-20, 14-2) saw a dominate 8-0 five-inning win over the Colgate Raiders (18-31, 6-10) on Saturday, clinching at least a share of the Patriot League Regular Season Championship.
Alongside the Game One win and winning at least a share of the regular season championship title, the Black Knights also clinched the No.1 seed of the Patriot League Tournament starting May 8 and will host the tournament at the Army Softball Complex.
The game one win was fueled by a seven-run second inning, featuring a two-run home run from Ashton White. The junior finished the game with a team-high two RBIs, while Caitlyn Newburn finished the game with a team-high two hits.
Katelyn Flanders pitched all five innings of the game, finishing the day only allowing one hit and earning five strikeouts.
As for game two, the Black Knights jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Raiders cut the game to a 4-3 game before play was suspended until 9 a.m. Sunday due to weather and field conditions.
Before the suspension, Caitlyn Newburn led the Black Knights with two hits, including a three-run left-center home run.
GAME 1
The Raiders were able to get two on base in the top of the first inning by drawing a walk and a hit by pitch from Katelyn Flanders. But then the Black Knights forced a fielder's choice and Flanders got her first two strikeouts out of the game to leave the Raiders empty-handed.
The only base action the Black Knights saw in the bottom of the first was Christiana forcing a walk, but three putouts retired the inning.
Colgate earned their only hit in the top of the second inning, but a sacrifice bunt and two straight strikeouts from Flanders ended the top frame.
It was in the bottom of the second inning where Army was able to make it a 7-0 game only off of four hits and no errors.
Emma Murchison and Maisi Sigler started the inning by forcing two walks, then Leila Hurst singled to third base to load the bases.
Samantha Sims then singled to left center, sending Murchison home, and keeping the bases loaded. Then Sienna Tepley was able to reach by a walk through two illegal pitches, sending Sigler home.
Annie Christiana then also forced a bases-loaded walk, allowing Hurst to score. Taylor Brown then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Samantha Sims to advance home to make it a 4-0 game.
Then, during Ashton White's at-bat, Annie Christiana forced a run down, allowing Sienna Tepley to steal home to make it a 5-0 game. Ashton White then drilled a hit to center field, marking her fifth home run of the year to make it a 7-0 game.
Newburn would add her first hit of the game with a single, but the Black Knights were ultimately retired during the next two at-bats.
In the third inning, both teams went three-and-out, sending the game to the fourth inning.
Apart from the Raiders getting on base with another hit by a pitch from Flanders, the side was retired, forcing Colgate to remain runless.
Annie Christiana would start the bottom of the fourth inning with a bunt single, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ashton White. Caitlyn Newburn hit a single to left center, turning into an RBI with Christiana making it home, allowing Army to grow an 8-0 lead.
Emma Murchison would also earn a hit in the inning., but she was ultimately left on base.
In the top of the fifth, Katelyn Flanders and the Black Knights' defense forced the second three-and-out of the day, retiring the side, and officially run-ruling the Raiders in game one, 8-0.
GAME 2
In the top of the first inning, the Raiders were able to reach on a fielding error from Taylor Brown, but three putouts from the Black Knights' defense left the runner stranded.
The top of the first started with a single from Annie Christiana and a single from Taylor Brown. Then two batters later, Caitlin Newburn hit a deep shot to left center to make it a 3-0 game in Army's favor.
Leila Hurst and Breanna Coonfare were able to reach base due to hitting two singles, the Maaika Dones reached on an error.
Tayten Moore then got up to bat, then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 4-0 game. The bases were left loaded, but the Black Knights had already caused damage offensively.
Colgate was able to score one run off two hits and one walk off of starter Amanda Eaglin, but the Black Knights were able to get out of a bases-loaded situation with one run on the board.
Taylor Brown, Ashton White and Caitlyn Newburn all earned singles in the bottom of the second, but the Black Knights were unable to convert any of those hits into runs, making it still a 4-0 game.
Meanwhile, in the top of the third, the Raiders scored two runs off two hits and two errors, cutting it to a 4-3 game in Army's favor.
The bottom of the inning started with a single from Maaika Dones before Tayten Moore hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Dones to second. Then Julia Farris entered the game to pinch hit, right before it started storming in West Point.
The game was eventually suspended due to weather and field conditions, with the game scheduled to pick back up at 9 a.m. Sunday.
ON DECK
Up next, the Black Knights will resume play of game two of the series and play game three of the series matchup on Sunday. It will also be Senior Day at the Army Softball Complex, with the Black Knights celebrating its four seniors, Sophie Smith, Julia Farris, Maaika Dones and Leila Hirst.
The series resumes against the Raiders at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, with the games streaming live on ESPN+.
