Softball Secures Series Sweep Over Lafayette With Pair of Sunday Wins
April 27, 2025 | Softball
EASTON, Pa. – Army West Point softball (30-20, 13-2 Patriot League) clinched the series sweep over the Lafayette Leopards (7-28, 5-10 Patriot League) with a 2-1 eight inning win for the first game of the double header and a 6-4 win for the final game of the series.
Army totaled 21 hits over the day with 12 in the first game and nine in the second, led by Annie Christiana and Maisi Sigler with four each for the day.
Maisi Sigler notched her fourth home run of the season as she slammed a two-run homer out of the left field wall directly into near-20 mile per hour winds to help the Black Knights secure their third win of the weekend.
All three of Army's pitchers saw action on Saturday, totaling 12 strikeouts over the weekend with five to Katelyn Flanders, four to Amanda Eaglin, and three to Breanna Izzo.
Leila Hurst was a force in the infield on Sunday, racking up 20 putouts across the two games with Taten Moore tying her for a game-high seven in the second game of the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE: ARMY 2, LAFAYETTE 1 (8 Inn.)
Annie Christiana and Taylor Brown got Army on base in the first two at-bats of the game as Christiana knocked a single up the middle before she was put out on a fielder's choice from Brown's chip to the Leopards' second baseman.
After Ashton White's hit to right field was pulled down, a swing from Caitlyn Newburn nearly escaped Lafayette's second baseman but a quick gather and throw to first base sent Army into the field.
Amanda Eaglin dealt a three up, three down inning to bring the Black Knights back to the plate in the top of the second. A pair of singles up the middle put Maisi Sigler and Leila Hurst on base together in the top of the second as Maika Dones stepped into the batter's box with one out on the board.
Dones put a hit loose into the infield that eluded Lafayette's third baseman initially before she was able to tag Sigler out and leave Army with runners on first and second. Sienna Tepley's hit to the left side of the infield brought the bases loaded and Christiana's bouncing hit in the infield gave Hurst time to cross home plate and keep the bases loaded.
The Leopards returned to the plate, but the Black Knights quickly tallied two outs, holding off a double to right field to maintain their 1-0 advantage heading into the top of the third.
Lafayette dealt a three up, three down inning of their own in the top of the third and after a double down the left field line, a fumble at first base let the Leopards' baserunner cross home plate and bring things tied.
A scoreless fourth inning and a three up, three down top of the fifth for Army brought the Leopards back to the plate in the bottom of the fifth but strong defensive efforts by the Black Knights kept the game tied 1-1 as it moved into the top of the sixth.
The Black Knights put two runners on base with a pair of singles from Emma Murchison and Hurst, but the Leopards closed in on defense to turn Army's offense away. Army's infield returned the favor in the bottom of the sixth to send the Leopards away one, two, three and bring the Black Knights back to the plate for the top of the seventh.
Christiana knocked her third hit in four at-bats through the left side to give Army a runner on base, advancing to second as Brown knocked a single through the left side moments later.
Ashton White dropped a bunt in front of the batter's box and the Leopards took the opportunity to tag Christiana out at third, but the Black Knights retained two runners on base as Brown advanced to second and White took first base before a fly ball to right field marked the third out of the inning.
The Leopards put two runners on base with two outs on the board but a burst of speed from Tepley to catch a fly ball in left field halted the home team's momentum and sent the game to extra innings.
Army went to work to open the eighth inning as Sigler smacked a double out to the right center field wall to give Army a runner in scoring position and force a pitching change as Hurst stepped into the box.
Hurst fired a swing to the Leopards' right fielder that was collected for a lineout, but pinch hitter Breanna Coonfare sent a hit flying out to the centerfield wall to send Sigler around the bases and give Army a 2-1 lead moving into the bottom of the eighth.
The Black Knights quickly tallied two outs in Lafayette's time in the batter's box and it was a swing and a miss strikeout dealt by Breanna Izzo that clinched the first game of the double header in Army's favor.
GAME TWO: ARMY 6, LAFAYETTE 4
Christiana knocked a single to left field to kick off the second game of the day looking to carry over the momentum from the end of game one, but despite advancing to second base when White drew a walk, the Black Knights were sent away scoreless in the top of the fourth.
Army flipped the script and sent Lafayette packing in the first inning with a put out from Samantha Sims and a pair of strikeouts for Katelyn Flanders. Lafayette returned the favor in the top of the second, retiring Army for the inning in three batters.
The Leopards scored first in the contest, putting two runners on base and dropping a short bunt to send their front runner across home plate before the Black Knights could send them away.
A three up, three down inning for both teams in the third brought Army back into the batter's box for the top of the fourth inning where three consecutive singles for White, Sigler, and Murchison gave the Black Knights a bases-loaded opportunity with zero outs on the board.
A fielding error by Lafayette's short stop on Hurst's knock to the left side allowed Army to advance its baserunners and bring the game tied 1-1. Coonfare then cranked a single through left center that gave the defense enough trouble that Sigler and Murchison both had time to make it across home plate to take Army to a surging 3-1 lead before the Leopards could halt Army's progress with a double play.
Army closed out the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of fly outs and a ground out to Sims at second base to hold off a double from the home team.
The Black Knights surged ahead once more in the top of the fifth inning, first as Brown drew a walk and made her way home on an Ashton White triple to center field.
White then crossed home plate herself as Maisi Sigler ripped a home run out of the park directly into the heavily gusting winds in left field for a two RBI home run that brought Army to a 6-1 lead in the final game of the afternoon.
The Leopards logged a double play to retire Army's next two baserunners and take their turn at the plate, putting two runners on base with a single and a walk before the Black Knights logged a fly out and a pop out to hold the score at 6-1 moving into the sixth inning.
Three consecutive ground outs against the Black Knights brought the home team back to the plate where their first batter of the inning knocked a double into left field.
Katelyn Flanders remained cool under pressure as she dealt a strikeout swinging to Lafayette's Kylee Sweet with the bases loaded for the Leopards to send the home team away scoreless in the sixth.
Taylor Brown knocked a double to the center field wall to give Army a runner in scoring position in its first at bat of the seventh inning but three straight putouts for the Leopards held Army's total at six runs heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Leopards put two more runs on the board with a two RBI double to left center field from Lafayette's Regan Dillon to bring the game to a 6-3 lead for Army.
Breanna Izzo stepped into the circle to relieve Flanders with one out on the board and the junior pitcher soon dealt a strikeout to record the second out of the inning. A sky-high pop up in the infield eluded Army's infield, giving the Leopards' batter time to take second base and their base runner on second base time to run home and cut the Black Knights' lead to two.
Izzo held her ground, however and dealt another strikeout to secure the series sweep for the Black Knights with their 6-4 win in game three.
