Hockey Upsets No.18 UMass to Close Out the Month of November

WEST POINT N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (4-8-3, 1-8-2 Atlantic Hockey America) secured a ranked win over the No. 18 University of Massachusetts Minutemen (8-8-0, 2-5-0 Hockey East) at Tate Rink, Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-4. For the Black Knights, this is their second win over a ranked opponent this season, after defeated No. 11 Northeastern on Oct. 10, 2025. Sophomore Jacob Biren earned his first collegiate victory in between the pipes for Army. Junior Brent Keefer scored his first game-winning goal of the season.
Sophomore Jacob Biron started at goalie for the Black Knights, where he recorded 34 saves against the Minutemen. Across the ice, UMass sent junior goaltender Michael Hrabal between the pipes where he recorded nine saves on Army's 14 shots on goal during his time on the ice. After the second intermission, the Minutemen sent junior Jackson Irving to the goal where he recorded eight saves on all eight of the Black Knights shots on goal during the third period.
The Black Knights came out aggressive from puck drop taking four shots on goal in five minutes of action before the Minutemen could take a shot of their own. After seven minutes of play had elapsed, UMass scored the first goal of the night. The Minutemen stayed on attack after getting on the board taking three shots on goal in the next three minutes while holding Army away from the opportunity to tie the score.
An Army penalty would set up UMass for a power play which they took advantage of. With just over two minutes left to play before the first intermission, the Minutemen scored their second goal of the afternoon.
With just 45 seconds left to play in the first period, the tides turned for the Black Knights. Sophomore Nils Forselius came from behind the Minutemen's and fought the puck past Hrabal to get Army on the board. The forwards third goal of the season gave the Black Knights momentum heading into the first intermission.
Army started the second frame looking to build off the momentum from their late goal in the first period. A UMass penalty for tripping two minutes into the period sent Army on a power play, giving them the opportunity to stay on the attack. With just 2:43 elapsed off the game clock, the Black Knights tied the score with their second goal of the game.
Barron Woodring sent a pass behind the goal to Jack Ivey who found twin brother Ben Ivey at the doorstep where he sent the puck through the five hole to even the score at two apiece.
The Black Knights would not quit as just a minute and a half later they would claim their first lead of the afternoon. Vincent Salice set up by Woodring on a two on one towards the UMass goal found the back of the net for Army's third goal of the game.
The Minutemen were quick to respond to slow down Army's momentum. UMass scored tied the score at three just five and a half minutes into the frame.
For the next eleven minutes of the second period, UMass looked to reclaim the lead taking five shots on goal to Army's one. Great defense from Biron and the Black Knights kept the score tied at three. With three and a half minutes left before the second intermission, an Army penalty sent UMass on a power play where the Minutemen would look to climb ahead once again.
The Black Knights resilience shined as Woodring on a breakaway opportunity scored a short-handed goal for Army's fourth goal of the night. Woodring fired a shot that snuck past the glove of Hrabal and into the back of the net to make it 4-3.
UMass continued their power play and just 23 seconds after Woodring's goal would tie the score once again. Despite the Minutemen's pressure to retake the lead in the final minutes of the second frame, outstanding defense from Biron gave Army the opportunity to retake the lead once more.
With just three seconds left before the conclusion of the second period, on the assist by Pierce Patterson, Brent Keefer scored Army's fifth goal of the night. Keefer fired the puck to the top left corner which got around Hrabal and into the back of the goal.
The Minutemen's offense stayed aggressive through the final frame, taking a flurry of shots on goal between the third and fourth minutes of the third period. Jacob Biron rose to the occasion diving back and forth to record saves on all four of the shots on goal by UMass to keep Army ahead. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the final period to help secure the Black Knight victory.
