January 07, 2025 | Hockey
SPRINGFIELD, MA - Army West Point hockey (5-15-0, 5-8-0 Atlantic Hockey America) fell by a score of 8-2 to the AIC Yellow Jackets (7-13-1, 5-8-0 Atlantic Hockey America) in its first conference game in over a month.
AIC went ahead 3-0 in the first period en route to the victory, as Chase Clark made 49 saves in net for the Yellow Jackets to earn the win and three AHA points.
Vincent Salice scored the first goal for the Black Knights early in the second period off a feed from Mac Gadowsky before Ben Ivey deposited his second of the season in the third. Army outshot the Yellow Jackets 51-44 for the contest.
It took just 61 seconds for AIC to open the scoring as nifty passing led to a Josh Barnes tally to quickly make it 1-0.Â
Army outshot AIC 17-11 in the first twenty minutes, but could not find a goal as the Yellow Jackets then poured in two more via Oscar Geschwind and Justin Mexico to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
Evan Szary entered in net after the first frame after JJ Cataldo got the start, with Szary eventually tabbing 28 saves in 40 minutes of action.
Army opened the second period with life as Vincent Salice scored his first goal of the season 72 seconds in to get the Black Knights on the board. Mac Gadowsky intercepted an errant pass from the AIC netminder and fed Salice in the slot who fired home a wristshot which made the score 3-1.
Minutes later, the AIC answered with an even strength goal which made it a three-goal contest again at 4-1, but then the Yellow Jackets took a too many men on the ice penalty to put Army on the power-play. The Black Knights were unable to capitalize and then took a too many men penalty of their own just over midway through the period.
AIC capitalized on its man-advantage, as Dario Beljo fed Danny Weight to give the home side a commanding 5-1 lead with 6:17 to play in the second. Army had chances with Salice forcing a smart save from Clark but the Yellow Jackets eventually took the four-goal lead into the final twenty minutes.
Nursing its lead in the third, AIC added a sixth midway through the period as tic-tac-toe passing from Mexico to Beljo to Geschwind make it a five-goal game. Four minutes later, David Posma netted the seventh of the game with just under seven minutes remaining in the contest.
Ben Ivey got Army its second of the game in the closing minutes, corralling a loose puck off the end board and beating Clark from close range for a tally assisted by Jack Ivey and Nils Forselius.
Army got a power-play late on but was not able to break through, with AIC then scoring again on the power-play with 23 seconds remaining, solidifying the final score of 8-2.
Army will return home to host Mercyhurst on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. with game two set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
