Hockey Explodes for Nine Goals to Take Down Mercyhurst

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point hockey (6-15-0, 6-8-0 Atlantic Hockey America) defeated the Mercyhurst Lakers (2-18-3, 2-11-2 Atlantic Hockey America) with a decisive 9-1 win on Friday night game at Tate Rink.
All 12 Army forwards recorded a point for the Black Knights who poured in nine goals for the first time since 2010 to snap a nine-game losing streak.
The Black Knights jumped out to a daunting 5-0 lead early in the first period, adding a pair of goal in each of the following two periods with Mercyhurst managing only one goal against freshman goaltender JJ Cataldo.
Cataldo made 25 saves in total in the contest, his tenth game this season with at least 25 saves while picking up his fifth win.
Ben Ivey was the lone Black Knight to score twice, with 16 skaters total getting on the scoresheet in the game. Barron Woodring, Jack Ivey and Mac Gadowsky each had three-point nights while Vincent Salice, Nik Hong and Brent Keefer each had a pair of points.
Plebe Dylan Wegner deposited his first career goal in the second period with assists coming from Michael Sacco and Adam Marshall.
Mercyhurst's Carter McPhail delivered 21 saves for the Lakers during the first period before the Lakers' Michael Chambre took his spot in between the pipes in the second period, making 23 saves over the final two periods.
The Black Knights hit the ice ready for battle in the Friday night contest, stalwartly defending their own goal as the action began at Tate Rink while simultaneously turning up the heat on the Mercyhurst defense.
Army broke open the scoring midway through the first 20 minutes of action as Barron Woodring got the Black Knights on the board first with a goal at 9:37.
The sophomore forward capitalized on an Army rush during which Salice centered the puck for Woodring to fire a shot, and after he was blocked by a Mercyhurst player's skate, Woodring chipped a shot to the upper right side of the goal to open the scoring 1-0 in Army's favor.
The Black Knights remained in possession of the puck and would extend their lead minutes later as Hunter McCoy buried a quick shot only seconds after a Nik Hong faceoff win in the circle to the right of the Lakers goal at 12:34.
Army drew a penalty 30 seconds later and fired off seven shots, but the Lakers killed the penalty at 15:10.
The Black Knights would not be stopped, however, and Mac Gadowsky took care of a rebound that flew away from the Lakers' netminder after a shot from Sam Groebner at with just under five minutes remaining in the first period to extend Army's lead to three.
Only ten seconds later Nik Hong found the back of the net, chipping up a shot from behind the net that ricocheted off of a Mercyhurst player and into the back of the net to take Army up 4-0.
Ben Ivey then netted his third goal of the season, dancing around the edge of the crease and lifting the puck over Mercyhurst's goalie at 18:38 to give Army a 5-0 edge heading into the first intermission.
Dylan Wegner nabbed the first goal of his collegiate career just over a minute into the return to play, making good on a heads-up play with a multitude of Black Knights sharing possession in their offensive zone and Wegner burying a rebound to extend the Army lead to six goals.

It marked the first game in which both Ivey brothers netted a goal.
