March 02, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, NY – Army West Point women's lacrosse (1-4) picked up its first victory of the season with an 18-11 win over Hofstra (1-3) on Saturday afternoon from Michie Stadium.
Brigid Duffy had a career-high 11 points to lead the Black Knights, scoring seven goals to go along with four assists. Allison Reilly recorded four goals as another one of five Black Knights to have multi-goal efforts.
Army dominated the draw, winning 23 of 31 in the game behind a career-high seven draw controls from Madeline Lenkart and seven more from Duffy. Duffy added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to her all-around effort.
After Hofstra netted the opening goal 2:38 into the contest, Duffy got her first ten seconds later directly off her own draw win as the Black Knights would not trail for the remainder of the game. Lily Valentini scored a pair of woman-up goals in the first as the Pride continued to put itself in at a disadvantage with five cards in the opening quarter. Duffy added two more at the end of the frame to get her hat trick early and give Army a 5-2 lead through one.
Duffy then did the assisting to Reilly for Army's next goal, capping a 4-0 run that made it 6-2 Army with 13:49 to go until halftime. Hofstra had its best stretch of the game right after, scoring three times as back-to-back scores from Nikki Mennella made it a 6-5 game with 7:07 to go in the second. Despite each team combining for just four saves in the first half, the final seven minutes saw zero goals as shots were eventually even at 13 apiece through the first half-hour.
Army's offense found its groove in the second half, scoring six times in each quarter as Duffy continued to dictate play. She potted the first goal of the half before Reilly scored a highlight reel solo goal from a tight angle after cutting from behind the net. The Pride refused to go away, with a Megan Flannery score making it an 8-7 game midway through the third quarter.
The draw control for Army took it from there, eventually securing 14 of the 18 draws in the second half. Army ended the frame on a 4-0 spurt spearheaded bu Duffy who scored three more including an unassisted tally in the closing seconds to give her seven goals for the game and Army a 12-7 cushion heading into the fourth.
With only Duffy, Reilly and Valentini scoring the first 12 tallies for Army, both Gabrielle Mirak and Julia Gorjake got on the scoresheet with a pair of goals each in the fourth quarter. Duffy assisted the first from Mirak and both Gorajek's, giving the sophomore a career-best 11 points to go along with matching a career-high of four assists. Reilly got her fourth of the game to cap the scoring for Army, as plebe Ryan Remaly recorded her first point in an Army uniform with an assist.
Lacey Bartholomay, Lindsey Serafine and Sherry Feng each saw time in the cage, as only two saves were made behind just 13 shots on goal from the Pride. Lexi Patterson also made her first career start for the Black Knights in the contest.
The 18 goals marked a season-high for Army as the draw control domination was also a first for the Black Knights in 2024. Army will head west for its final non-conference competition, taking on Cal this Wednesday before a matchup with Stanford on Saturday.
