Women's Lacrosse Shuts Down Cal

BERKELEY, CA - Army West Point women's lacrosse (2-4, 0-0 Patriot League) surrendered just one goal in the second half on its way to a dominant 15-4 win at Cal (1-5, 0-0 Pac-12) on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Allison Reilly led the Black Knights with five goals and seven points while four Black Knights netted hat tricks in total. Freshman Ryan Remaly notched her first career goal before finishing the game with three tallies, as sophomore Brigid Duffy and senior Julia Gorajek also scored thrice in the effort. Sophomore Lindsey Serafine was dominant after coming on at halftime in the cage, making eight stops in total while allowing just one goal in the final half hour.
The overall defensive effort also sees the fourth game in program history in which Army has held an opponent to four goals or fewer, and second during the Michelle Tumolo era. The game marked Army's first-ever in the state of California, and also gave the Black Knights its first-ever wins against a team from California or a Pac-12 opponent.
Army's offense struggled through the opening 15 minutes before exploding for eight goals in the second quarter to go into the half with a 9-3 lead. Gorajek had the lone goal of the first frame, as Lacey Bartholomay saved a free-position attempt in the closing seconds which kept it a 2-1 Cal advantage heading into the second.
Duffy got Army on level terms with her first of the game with Remaly then putting Army ahead just 26 seconds later with her first career goal which came off an assist from Gorajek. With just over five minutes remaining in the half, Army held a 4-3 lead after Reilly scored her first of the game, as the Black Knights would then end the half on a 5-0 run.
Remaly got her second of the game on the woman-up with Reilly logging the assist, as Gorajek then made it a 6-3 game with 2:36 left on the clock with a free-position score. Reilly then took over, scoring three times in the final two minutes featuring a pair of goals from the eight-meter, as the the sophomore finished three-for-three on free-position attempts in the game. All five of Reilly's goals in the game were also unassisted.
Army's defensive effort was the story of the second half, with Serafine coming on at halftime in the cage for Army. The sophomore stopped all four shots faced in the third quarter to shut Cal out for the entire frame, as an early goal from Duffy which made it 10-3 was followed by over 10 minutes of scoreless lacrosse. Marissa Massey then picked up a ground ball and took it towards the cage before getting fouled and scoring from the eight-meter for her first tally of the season, and Army's first goal from a defender of the campaign. Remaly capped the eventual 8-0 Army run to secure her hat trick just before the break, as the Black Knights took a 12-3 lead into the fourth quarter.
Serafine continued to command the game in the fourth, making four more stops while allowing just one goal to the Bears which came on a woman-up advantage. Reilly netted her game-high fifth of the game to begin the scoring for Army, as Gorajek and Duffy each scored their third of the game in the closing minutes to push the contest to a 15-4 final.
Army outshot the Bears 33-17 in total as the defensive effort saw just eight successful clears from Cal on 15 attempts. Madeline Lenkart paced the team with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while Gorajek registered four ground balls and Meghan Pedrani logged three. Duffy had the team-high in draw controls with three as Lenkart and Ellie Nawa each secured a pair.
The Black Knights will have a couple of days off before taking on Stanford on Saturday, with opening draw set for 4:00 p.m. ET / 1:00 p.m. PT.
