December 28, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey (5-12-0, 5-7-0 Atlantic Hockey America) returned to a sold out Tate Rink on Saturday night to take on Princeton (6-4-1, 3-4-1 ECAC Hockey), with the Tigers coming away with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Forward Jake Manfre scored the lone goal of the game for Princeton midway through the first period on a Tigers power play with Noah de la Durantaye and David Jacobs earning the assists.
Arthur Smith earned a 25-save shutout in net for the Tigers.
Freshman goaltender JJ Cataldo totaled 22 saves in the contest for the Black Knights, improving his save-percentage to .935 this season as he remains among the nation's leaders.
The Tigers struck early and held their lead from the first period through the final whistle despite an onslaught of shots from the Black Knights.
Army recorded four shots in the first three minutes of action, but Princeton turned the tide and made good on its fourth shot of the game as Manfre redirected a shot fired through traffic to find the back of the net and give the visitors a 1-0 lead just under eight minutes into the game.
The Black Knights fought to eliminate the deficit, but the Smith continued to stand tall, and the score held at 1-0 in Princeton's favor heading into the break.
As the second period began, Cataldo made two saves back-to-back less than a minute back into the action to deny Princeton forward Jayden Sison on his breakaway opportunity and keep the differential as it was.
The two teams battled for control with Army looking to equalize halfway through the second period on a strong shot from freshman Dylan Wegner that ricocheted off the top left corner of the crossbar.
Wegner's shot was initially called a goal for Army, but it was called back moments later after review.
The Black Knights kept the pressure on in the second period, notching 13 shots on goal to Princeton's seven, but the score held firm moving into the third period.
Princeton jumped back on the attack as the final 20 minutes of action began, putting up seven shots in the first five minutes after the return to play.
Army pulled Cataldo from the net with just under two and a half minutes left in the game to gain a sixth skater, but despite a flurry of attacks from Army as the Black Knights recorded six shots in the final two minutes of action, the Tigers held firm and took home a 1-0 victory.
The stalemate was maintained as the clock ticked down by both goalies as both Cataldo and Princeton's goalie Arthur Smith recorded double digit saves in the third period with 11 saves for Cataldo and 10 for Smith.
Army will turn around and take on Vermont tomorrow, Dec. 29th at Tate Rink in a contest set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
