Hockey Falls 6-0 Against Vermont
December 29, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point hockey (5-13-0, 5-7-0 Atlantic Hockey America) was defeated by a score of 6-0 by the Vermont Catamounts (7-8-3, 3-4-2 Hockey East) on Sunday evening at Tate Rink.
The Catamounts struck hard and fast in the first period, racking up four goals within the first 10 minutes of action to jump out to an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
Axel Mangbo made 25 saves to collect the shutout for the Catamounts in goal while collecting his first career assist on a second period power-play goal.
After coming on in relief, JJ Cataldo made 15 saves between the pipes for the Black Knights while allowing two goals.
Less than four minutes in, a quick series of passes across the point that culminated in a shot from the left circle three and a half minutes into Saturday's game gave UVM their first goal of the evening from Timofei Spitserov.
The visitors then nabbed two goals within 40 seconds of each other first with a quick shot lifted off of the crossbar and left post by Max Strand followed by an uncollected rebound that was tapped across the line by the Catamounts' Jens Richards to give UVM a 3-0 lead at 6:54.
Vermont extended their lead only three minutes later with a bang bang play that built from neutral zone. A chipped up pass was brought down by the visitors and tapped to a skater in the right circle and then sent to Vermont's Isak Walther just in front of the crease where he hit the one-timer into the back of net.Â
JJ Cataldo then stepped between the pipes to stand as Army's goaltender and would remain on the ice for the remainder of the game.
The Black Knights fought to get on the board before the first intermission with the tension rising between the two squads and culminating in a scuffle behind the Catamounts' net that resulted in a roughing penalty for Joey Baez at 13:54, but despite extracurriculars from both teams, the 4-0 differential held through to the second period.
Army went to work in the second period, fighting every shift to find the back of the net, but despite the Black Knights leading the Catamounts with eight shots on goal to UVM's five, Army remained scoreless through 40 minutes of action.
Army took consecutive penalties late in the second frame, giving Vermont a minute of five-on-three play. Despite killing off the first penalty, Massimo Lombardi struck on the power-play off a feed from Colin Kessler to make it a 5-0 game before the second intermission.
Army dominated possession in the third period, notching 28 total shots and landing 13 on-target, but Vermont would find the back of the net once again in the final twenty to bring the final score to 6-0.
Army returns to action for the first time in the new year on Friday, Jan. 3rd at Tate Rink when it takes on Merrimack at 7:00 p.m.
