November 26, 2024 | Hockey
BOSTON, Mass. – Army West Point hockey (5-8-0, 5-6-0 Atlantic Hockey America) took on the Stonehill Skyhawks (6-11-0) and fell 3-1 after a late push from the home team.
Army tied the game at one through Ben Ivey's first career goal in the third period, but the Skyhawks found a winner with 2:14 to play before scoring on the empty net. Ivey's first Army goal was assisted by his brother Jack, who netted his first score on Saturday.
JJ Cataldo was strong once again for the Black Knights in goal, registering 33 saves with the two goals allowed.
The score stood tied at 0-0 after the first period as both teams' defenses continued to block and force shots wide.
The Black Knights were on the front foot throughout the first 20 minutes of action, outshooting Stonehill with 15 shots on goal to the Skyhawks' seven.
Army worked to break the stalemate in the second period, twice putting up four shots on a power play as each saw three saves made from Connor Androlewicz in the Skyhawks' goal, to go along with a couple of key blocks to help preserve the 0-0 tie.
The Skyhawks broke the standoff with only 23 seconds left in the second period as JJ Cataldo's rejection of a Stonehill shot was left in an open area and quickly lifted into the net by Anthony Galante off the rebound. Army trailed 1-0 entering the third
Stonehill controlled the momentum as the third period began, recording nine shots in just over two minutes of action, but the Black Knights would battle back and even the score with eight minutes left to play.
Ben Ivey recorded his first collegiate goal with a quick shot through traffic on a setup from his brother, Jack Ivey, and Mac Gadowsky to bring the game tied 1-1.
Stonehill leapt back on the offensive, making a shot through traffic of their own with just over two minutes left on the game clock to take a 2-1 lead through Evan Orr.
The Skyhawks' advantage expanded to a 3-1 lead only two minutes later with an empty-net goal that held Stonehill's lead through the final whistle.
Army will return to the road on Friday for a contest with Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., beginning at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
