Hockey Falls Short at UMass, 3-1

AMHERST, MA – Army West Point hockey (5-9-0, 5-6-0 Atlantic Hockey America) fell to the UMass Minutemen (7-6-2, 1-4-2 Hockey East) by a score of 3-1 on Friday afternoon from the Mullins Center.
With the game 1-0 in favor of UMass through the opening 35 minutes, a pair of power-play goals late in the second proved the difference as the Minutemen took a 3-0 lead into the final frame.
Evan Szary got the start in goal for the Black Knights, matching a career-high with 39 saves in total.
Barron Woodring had the lone goal for Army with a power-play score midway through the third period.
Army had a pair of power-play chances early in the game as the Minutemen were twice call for too many men on the ice in the opening 15 minutes of the game.
The Black Knights' power-play was unable to capitalize and UMass eventually scored the opening goal at even strength with Francesco Dell'Elce giving the home side the lead with 1:54 to go in the frame.
Shots were even at nine apiece in the first period and Army trailed 1-0.
The second period was UMass come out strong and dominate possession and the opportunities, eventually outshooting Army 24-5 in the period.
Army killed off its second penalty of the game early in the period, but was unable to kill its third and fourth as UMass scored a pair with the extra man in the final five minutes through Cole O'Hara and Daniel Jencko to go into the third with a three-goal lead.
Army settled in during the third period, eventually getting another power-play opportunity midway through the period.
Barron Woodring got Army on the board, snapping an eight-game skid without a power-play goal for the Black Knights. Nils Forselius provided the assist to Woodring who put one between his legs with his back to the goaltender for his fourth tally of the season.
UMass was able to to maintain its two-goal lead into the final minutes as Army pulled Szary with over two minutes to play, but despite controlling possession, were unable to bring it to within a one-goal game.
Michael Hrabal made 24 saves in goal for the Minutemen to earn his seventh win of the season.
Woodring continued to make his mark in the faceoff circle, winning 12 of 17 draws while Easton Zueger logged four blocked shots to lead Army's defensive unit.
The Black Knights will return with a league game on Tuesday night at Sacred Heart with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. on FloHockey.
