October 25, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (1-3-0, 1-2-0 AHA) was edged by a 6-3 scoreline in its home opener against conference foe Bentley (2-2-1, 1-0-0 AHA) on Friday night from Tate Rink.
The contest had a special prologue with an NHL Night ceremony with the Stanley Cup and various West Point graduates within the Florida Panthers organization including former Army Hockey captain and Panthers COO Bryce Hollweg '08. Florida's team owner Vincent Viola '77 dropped the ceremonial puck with team president and CEO Matthew Caldwell recognized as well.
Bentley used four unanswered goals which included a pair of scores on the first shift of the period in both the second and third frames. Michael Sacco recorded a goal and assist with Nik Hong and Barron Woodring tallying goals in the effort.
Army came out the stronger side in the first period, doubling the Falcons total shots on target 10-5, although Bentley hit a pair of posts. Army's first power-play opportunity of the game was successful with Mac Gadowksy seeding a perfect pass for a tight finish in front from Nik Hong who was inserted back into the lineup after being held out due to injury last weekend. It marked Hong's second goal in as many games played to begin his sophomore campaign.
The Falcons answered out of the intermission with a goal less than 60 seconds into the second which opened up the game in Bentley's favor. It was eventually four unanswered goals at even strength for Bentley including another score in the first minute of the third.Â
Army attempted a valiant comeback effort, with Sacco scoring less than three minutes later to get the game back to within two goals as both Jack Ivey and Ben Ivey recorded their first collegiate points on the goal. Barron Woodring then notched his team-leading third goal of the young season as Sam Groebner delivered a centering pass to the Army sophomore.
With momentum on the side of the Black Knights, Bentley and Ethan Leyh put Army's comeback hopes to rest with a power-play goal after a too many men penalty made it 5-3 with exactly five minutes remaining. Leyh added an empty netter which brought the final score to 6-3.
Army outshot Bentley 29-26 in the game, with the second period proving the difference in the scoring margin. Connor Hasley picked up the win in net for the Falcons while making 26 saves as Evan Szary registered 20 saves for Army. The Falcons held a hefty 39-18 advantage in the faceoff circle, highlighted by Chase Davis' ten-for-eleven mark.
The two sides will rematch tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.Â
