#15 Women's Lacrosse Falls 13-8 in Patriot League Championship to #9 Loyola

BALTIMORE, MD - No. 15 Army West Point women's lacrosse (15-3, 8-1 Patriot League) was defeated by a score of 13-8 in the Patriot League Championship to No. 9 Loyola (17-2, 9-0 Patriot League).
Brigid Duffy led the Black Knights with a four-point effort (two goals, two assists) while securing four draw controls, picking up two ground balls and having zero turnovers. Julia Franzoni was a force in the draw circle yet again, securing a game-high eight draw controls to go along with a goal. Franzoni helped a draw effort that saw a 13-11 advantage for Army, marking the second time this season that Loyola has lost the draw battle, and first time in the Patriot League.
Duffy and Franzoni were each named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team, along with Cathleen Parker and Kathleen Sullivan. Duffy posted a team-high five goals and eight points in the tournament, along with 11 draw controls and four ground balls. Franzoni netted a goal in each game while securing 18 draw controls across both games as Army won 34 of 54 draws in the tournament. Parker had a standout tournament on the defensive end, helping Army hold a pair of all-league first team attackers to a combined four points across both games. Sullivan logged a pair of goals and assists in the tournament, including the overtime game-winner in the semifinal versus Navy.
Loyola came out determined with the first two scores of the game within the first five minutes. Army got on the board soon after with Jolie Riedell feeding Julia Gorajek for a score off a free-position attempt. Allison Reilly stayed hot with a goal midway through the first quarter, which saw Army cut it to a 3-2 Loyola advantage. After the Greyhounds netted their third of the game with 8:08 to go in the first, the Army defense was able to hold them scoreless for the ensuing 13+ minutes into the second quarter.
After trailing 3-2 after one, Riedell promptly tied the score with a free-position goal with 11:52 to play in the half. Loyola responded to retake its lead just over two minutes after, as Army eventually tied the score after a brilliant move and shot from Brigid Duffy with 2:38 to play. Lindsey Serafine made three saves in the quarter for Army, before Loyola was able to score twice in the final minute to take momentum into the half. A woman-up free-position goal with two seconds remaining from Sydni Black gave the Greyhounds a 6-4 lead at the break.
The Greyhounds extended their scoring run to begin the second half, after making a save on an early attempt from Reilly. It was an eventual 6-0 run altogether from Loyola, taking a 10-4 lead with 5:06 left in the third. Kathleen Sullivan gave Army life less than a minute later, firing home a free-position shot to cut the lead to five. Army entered the fourth quarter, trailing by five and with 1:20 left on a woman-up advantage.
Duffy capitalized after beating her defender and firing past Lauren Spence for her fifth goal of the tournament. Duffy hit the post less than a minute later which would have cut it down to a three-goal lead, as Loyola answered on its next possession to go ahead 11-6. With 7:09 left in the game, the Greyhounds poured in their 13th tally of the game, going ahead by seven to begin running the clock on offense. Carleigh Armstrong and Franzoni deposited goals in the final three minutes for Army, which made it a 13-8 final score from Ridley Athletic Complex.
