May 19, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, NY – The Army men's lacrosse team is set to take on No. 5 seed Penn State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in Annapolis, MD on Sunday at noon on ESPNU.
This is the first time Army is in the quarterfinals since 2010 when they took on Cornell after beating No. 2 seed Syracuse.
SERIES HISTORY
Army leads 29-3 but Penn State has won the last two matchups with the most recent one coming in 1999.
LAST TIME OUT
Army upset #4 Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in thrilling fashion. The Black Knights raced out to an early 7-2 lead but Maryland would tie things up at halftime. After a back and forth third quarter, Army entered the final frame down a goal. Jacob Morin would net the biggest goal of his career to put Army up for good with 3:36 left and Army would advance for the first time since 2010.
KEEP THE CHANGE
Team captain Jacob Morin coined the phrase "Keep the Change" as this year's team motto after being picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League. "It's just that mentality that we're underdogs," Morin said. "We take that personal".
Team captain Andrew Kelly said, "Even after some of our big wins this year. Keep the change. Whatever the media wants to say let them say it. We know what we have in this room and in this family. We just need to focus on us and keep it rolling".
Knox Dent said, "It only matters what we have in the locker room, that we believe in ourselves. So it's like, 'Hey, that stuff's irrelevant. We don't need to buy into it.' No, it doesn't matter now. It's not gonna matter later. So at the end of the day, 'Keep the change, we don't want to hear it.' You know, you didn't believe in us at the beginning. So don't
believe in us now."
UNSUNG HEROES
Seven of Army's 16 goals came from players who entered the game with less than five goals. Avi Mehl, Mike Tangredi, John Manero, Finn McCullough, Andrew Kelly, and Dawson Clark all stepped up when their names were called to push Army past Maryland.
FORT KNOX (DENT)
Senior goalie Knox Dent has put opposing offenses in lockdown all season long. He ranks sixth in the nation in goals against average (9.47) and 12th in save percentage (.539). He won Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and was insane in the first round making a stellar 16 saves against the defending national champs.
GROUND BALL MACHINE
Coletti has shattered the previous single season ground balls record. His 153 ground balls this season bring his career total to 256 which is fifth most in program history. His 9.56 GB per game is on pace to blow the current career record out of the water with second best being 5.57 GB per game.
