Big Third Quarter Lifts Army in League Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – A seven-goal third quarter by the 16th-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team proved to be the difference in a 13-6 win at Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon in the Patriot League opener.
The Black Knights (4-1, 1-0 Patriot League) were led by Evan Plunkett's seven-point afternoon with three goals and four assists. Jacob Morin added five goals in the win and scored the first three goals of the game for Army. Bailey O'Connor and Gunnar Fellows also had multi-goal games for the winners. Knox Dent was challenged early in the contest and made seven saves in the win.
The Crusaders (0-4, 0-1 Patriot League) saw Dawson Friers keep them in the game for stretches and finished with 18 saves.
Holy Cross got on the board first and then Morin scored two goals to gain the lead for the Black Knights at 2-1 with 6:18 remaining. One of his first two on the day were on a man-up advantage. The Crusaders answered with William Stahl knotting the score up at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
Morin continued his scoring to start the second frame and he had the hat trick with Army up 3-2 with 12:12 on the clock. Andrew Kelly got in on the scoring to give the Black Knights a two-goal lead on a nice feed from Paul Johnson. Plunkett then found the back of the net with the first of his two in the half as he sprinted down the left side and buried it for the 4-2 lead.
After Holy Cross got back to within two at 5-3, Plunkett found the net with 35 seconds left with an assist Reese Burek and it was a 6-3 game at the break.
The third quarter was an Army onslaught with seven goals coming out of halftime to extend its lead to 13-4 heading into the final frame. O'Connor, Fellows and Morin all had two goals during the quarter and Evan Plunkett added his third of the afternoon. The Black Knights finished the frame with five tallies in a row.
The Crusaders got two back in the final quarter, but the Black Knights came away with their fourth win in a row and opened the Patriot League season with a victory.
Army is back in action for a Friday night matchup against Lafayette on March 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Michie Stadium.
