Softball Edged by Troy and North Florida in Day Two of UNF Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Army West Point softball (6-16) dropped both games on day two of the UNF Tournament, falling to both Troy (19-7) and North Florida (15-7) for the second time each in the series.
Army 0, Troy 8 (5 innings)
Troy's Leanna Johnson hurled a two-hitter, struck out four and issued one walk over four innings of work as the Trojans shut out Army, 8-0, in five innings in game one on Saturday at the UNF Tournament.
Taylor McKinney (2-for-2) and Libby Baker (2-for-3) each drove in a pair of runs and scored themselves in keying the Trojans' eight-hit attack against Army. Olivia Farris (2-8) was tagged for the loss. Troy scored six of its eight runs over the first two innings, exploding for five in the bottom of the first highlighted by McKinney's RBI triple delivering the first run and Kennedi Gaton's two-run double closing out the scoring.
McKinney, who scored three runs, ripped a home run to left center field in the Trojan's next at bat in the second to pad her team's lead to 6-0.
Kayla Edwards, who had both of Army's hits off Johnson, beat out a hit to the shortstop to open the top of the second but was stranded following an infield popup, strikeout and groundout. In the fourth inning, the Army outfielder singled to left field with one out before Johnson closed the door on a fielder's choice and infield lineout. Troy put across a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to cushion its lead to 8-0, then reliever Haley Pittman retired the Black Knights in the top of the fifth on a pair of strikeouts and a fly out, to put the win in the books on the mercy rule.
Army 2, North Florida 6
North Florida was able to get to Alicyn Grete early, with a pair of runs coming in to score in the bottom of the first inning with three base hits. Army answered in the top of the third inning, after Angelina Bebek drew a two-out walk. Ashton White then launched the first home run of her career to tie the score at two.Â
The Ospreys scored in the bottom of the fourth after a leadoff double and one-out walk came around to score on a clutch two-RBI single from Logan Jackson. Trailing 4-2, Army put traffic on the bases, but were unable to get the big hit and drive in a run. Doubles from Taylor Brown and Maddie Wilkes in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, were stranded by the Ospreys' Ashley Connor.
Grete finished the game with five-earned across five innings of work. After Amanda Eaglin allowed one unearned run t score, Army trailed 6-2 heading into the seventh inning. Brook Mitchell got on with a one-out base hit, but the Black Knights were unable to keep the line moving and suffered the 6-2 defeat.
Army will return on Sunday to take on Northern Kentucky at 11:00 a.m.
