No. 14 Women's Lacrosse Edges Boston University in Patriot League Opener
March 12, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, NY - No. 14 Army West Point women's lacrosse (6-0, 1-0 Patriot League) remained undefeated, taking down Boston University (5-2, 0-1 Patriot League) at home by a score of 17-15.Â
Brigid Duffy scored a career-high seven goals for the Black Knights, marking a new single-game program record for a freshman. Duffy now leads the Patriot League in goals this season with 23. Kathleen Sullivan scored four times for Army, as the Black Knights scored six in times in the fourth quarter after trailing 13-12 through three.
Duffy got the scoring started for the Black Knights with a free-position goal 4:39 in. She would quickly make it a 2-0 Army lead with another free-position tally. Army continued its scoring prowess in first quarters at Michie Stadium this season, netting five goals in the opening frame. Madison Warne fired in the third, with Sullivan and Marissa Massey adding a pair in the final two minutes. Lacey Bartholomay made three stops on four shots faced as the Black Knights took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.Â
The Terriers clawed back at the start of the second quarter, hold Army scoreless for the opening nine minutes of the quarter. Boston was able to tie the score at five with four unanswered goals, before Duffy once again netted back-to-back tallies, this time over a span of just 32 seconds to give Army back a 7-5 lead. The first came on a wonderful solo move to shake her defender behind the cage, and fire in frome close range past the Terriers keeper. The teams then traded goals before the half, as Sullivan secured her hat trick with a goal before finding Julia Franzoni with a nifty pass to make it a 9-7 Army lead at halftime.
Â
The third quarter belonged to the Terriers, even after Duffy scored her fifth of the game to open the scoring 2:30 in. Boston would end the quarter on a 5-1 run, with Sullivan's fourth of the game making it a 11-9 contest midway through the quarter. Three consecutive goals, including one with 25 seconds left on the clock, had the Terriers ahead 12-11 heading into a pivotal fourth quarter.
Trailing for the first time season in a fourth quarter, it would only last for seven seconds as Duffy continued to dominate the game. She grabbed the opening draw control in stride before sprinting down and beating the BU goalie with top-right shelf finish to tie it up at 12. Army got some breathing room through Carleigh Armstrong, who tallied back-to back goals to push it to a 14-12 Army lead. The second goal came in transition after Duffy grabbed a loose ball in the defensive end and eventually found a charging Armstrong. 38 seconds later, Duffy tallied her seventh goal of the game, coming within one of the overall Army single-game record.
Â
The Black Knights held a 15-12 lead with 11:01 to play after the quick response to open the frame. Army capitalized on two woman-up opportunities down the stretch, with Madison Warne providing a pair of assists to Franzoni and Sullivan eventually make it a 17-13 lead with 6:26 to go. Army executed time management at the end of the game once again and despite having multiple goals called off, held of the Terriers for a 17-15 victory.
