WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point Black Knights (5-6) won their third game in a row, defeating the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (7-4), 28-21 on senior day at Michie Stadium. Â
Army recognized 33 seniors pregame as a part of its senior day ceremony. Army improves to 9-1 on senior day in the Jeff Monken era. Â
Army set the tone for the day offensively, scoring on its first two drives of the game running 28 plays (all rushes) for 155 yards (5.5 avg.). Â
Army, as a team rushed for 365 yards on 62 attempts (5.9 avg.). Â
Tyson Riley led the charge on the ground eclipsing 100 yards for the second time in his career. Riley rushed for 112 yards on 12 carries (9.3 avg.). Riley was the feature back after playing TE and H-Back for most of the season. Â
QB Bryson Daily added 94 yards and a score on a team-high 22 carries. Â
Coastal Carolina won the toss and deferred to the second half. Army's offense opened the game with a familiar look to Army fans, running the under-center triple-option. Army ran the ball 13 straight plays, marching 75 yards taking eight minutes off the first quarter clock, capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by senior Tyson Riley. It was Riley's first rushing touchdown of the season and third overall. Senior RB Jakobi Buchanan rushed four times for 27 yards on the opening drive Â
Coastal wasted no time answering Army's drive, scoring in four plays on a 59-yard swing pass from QB Jarett Guest to WR Jared Brown to knot the game up at 7-7. Brown would finish the game as the Chanticleers' leading receiver with eight receptions for 116 yards. Â
Again, using the under-center look Army drove 15 plays 75 yards, soaking up 9:39 of the clock, which extended into the second quarter. The drive was finished off by QB Bryson Daily plowing forward for a one-yard touchdown run for Army to regain the lead, 14-7, Daily's seventh rushing touchdown of the season. Â
The Army defense responded by forcing a quick three and out. Â
Later in the second quarter, Army would grab a two-score lead, 21-7 when LB Brett Gerena blocked a Coastal Carolina punt attempt from P Evan Crenshaw, which was recovered and returned 37 yards by DB Jabril Williams for the scoop and score. It was Army's second consecutive week blocking a punt for a touchdown as Williams played an essential role on each of them. Â
Coastal would quickly respond to the momentum Army gained as Guest hit WR Jameson Tucker for a 31-yard touchdown strike on a deep post to make it a one-score game with under a minute to go in the half. Â
To open the second half, the Army defense quickly forced a three and out to get the Army offense back on the field. The Black Knights would score in four plays following a 43-yard run up the middle by Tyson Riley. Three plays later, WR Ay'Jaun Marshall would score his first touchdown of the season on an 18-yard run around the left end to again push the Army lead to two scores, 28-14. Â
The Chanticleers responded by moving 70 yards in 11 plays down to the Army five-yardline but the Army defense tightened up when they needed to the most as LB Leo Lowin had a furious run fit and stop on Coastal's CJ Beasley's rushing attempt and then DB Quindrelin Hammonds picked off Guest in the endzone to end the drive, marking back-to-back weeks he has recorded an interception as the senior safety now has three on the season. Â
The Chanticleers would add a late score with 51 seconds to play in the game, on Guest's third touchdown pass of the game, a 31-yard pass to WR Sam Pinckney. Â
Army would recover the Coastal onside kick attempt and get into victory formation to close out the senior day victory. Â
LB Leo Lowin paced the defense with a team-high seven tackles. Â
WR Ay'Jaun Marshall and RB Jakobi Buchanan each made solid contributions, each rushing for over 60 yards. Â
Coastal Carolina QB Jarrett Guest finished the game passing 26-36 for 279 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Â
