Gymnastics Posts Highest Season-Opening Score Since 2020 at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Army West Point gymnastics fell by a score of 402.900 to 378.300 to Penn State to open the 2023 campaign. It marked improvement for the Black Knights, who posted a team score of 358.200 in last year's matchup with the Nittany Lions to open the season.
The Black Knights landed three in the top-four in the parallel bars, led by Jackson Pophal's 12.850. Blaze Kennedy and Joseph Buselmeier each tied for third-place, with 12.800 scores to finish just behind Pophal.
Army's 63.25 on the pommel horse marked the highest team score in the event in over two years, led by Gabe Almeida and Maddox Pabellon's top-four finishes.
Almeida's 13.700 landed him in third-place while Pabellon posted a 13.500 score for a fourth-place showing. Blaze Kennedy added a 12.550 which landed in seventh-place individually. Almeida's score marked a career-best for the sophomore, who was named to the ECAC Preseason Gymnasts to Watch list before the season.
Jacob Nauman led the team on the floor, with a 13.100 which gave him a fourth-place finish in the event. Joseph Buselmeier (12.800) and Corban Barstow (12.700) were right behind Nauman to give Army three top-six finishes in the event. Buselmeier was Army's top finisher on rings with a 13.150, as Carter Beck and Patrick Armstrong each logged 12.800 scores in the event to follow.
Johnathan Pinc was stood out for Army on vault, with a 13.850 to lead the Black Knights and land in the top-five individually. Barstow and Nauman took home fifth and sixth place respectively, with scores of 13.750 and 13.550. Buselmeier's 13.000 score led Army on high bar, giving Buselmeier his third top-five finish in the meet with a fourth-place finish. Noah Pace (12.200) and Kalvin Kingshill (12.150) followed on high bar for Army.
